VMDirectPath and ATI Radeon

I am using VMware ESXi and I am trying to setup a guest that is Windows 7 that will have an ATI Radeon video card passed through to it.  I actually had this working on a previous system but I had to reinstall.  Now when I do this the guest fails to start and I get the following:

Error message from localhost.XXXXXXXXXXX:
PCIPassthru 004:00.0: Guest tried to (null)map
32 device pages (with base address of 0xb5d20)
to a range occupied by main memory. This is
outside of the PCI Hole. Add pciHole.start =
"2909" to the configuration file and then power
on the VM.

When I do as it asks, the guest now starts but gets an immediate BSOD concerning memory management.  Any ideas on why this is occuring and why it worked at one point but now it fails?

Shorten wait time before powering on host (Distributed Power Management)

Hi

I have a dev and test setup running 3 hosts with ESXi 5.5 and a vCenter appliance. On the cluster there is no HA active, but we do use DPM to power on/off our hosts.

However the business is not satisfied with the "speed of powering on" a host/resuming it from a "moon/standby status". Basically it's because vCenter is quite conservative in waiting to power on a host because it first wants to make sure the host is down. So when powering on a host it always says (although the host got shut down maybe like 8 hours ago): "waiting for host to power off before trying to power it on".

My question to you guys is: is there a parameter in the Advanced settings or wherever that I can change so that vCenter is a little bit snappier with booting/waking up a host?

I KNOW that it's a default setting and it's something determined as "safe" by VMware and VMware wants to make sure no unwanted actions are executed, but I have tested this for my setup thoroughly and I take full responsibility in lowering this time out...

Fusion 6.0.2 - Cannot connect the virtual device sound

Hi,

I have just recently upgraded my system to a new Mac Pro (MacPro6,1 - the coffee can style).

I have a set of speakers hooked up to the line out on the Mac Pro, and sound works fine in OS X.

I am using VMware Fusion 6.0.2.

However, I am having a peculiar sound issue in all my Windows VMs.

When I power them on, I get a notice stating:

Cannot connect the virtual device sound because no corresponding device is available on the host.

Do you want to try to connect this virtual device every time you power on the virtual machine?

               No            Yes

If I click no, I get asked the question again and again in an endless loop.

If I click yes, Windows starts, and the sound works, except it comes out of the internal speaker on the Mac Pro rather than the speakers on the line out.

I have multiple Windows VMs, (XP, Vista, and 7), and this problem affects all of them.

VMWare tools is up to date in all the VMs.

All of these machines were copied from my old Mac Pro, so for testing I decided to create a new VM from scratch.

I used Vista because I had that .iso handy.

At the end of the fresh install, after installing VMware tools and everything, the virutal machine had no sound.

Windows indicated that sound hardware is installed, and the windows volume meter visually shows sound playback (that little sound meter), but there is no sound outputed.

After shutting this new VM off and going to the settings, I noticed it had defaulted to having the sound card turned OFF.

I switched it on, and when I powered on I had the same message and problem as all the other VMs.

I also tried editing the .vmx to show sound.virtualdev = "es1371",but this disabled sound totally.

I'm out of ideas at this point.

Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated!!

From the editors virtual desk

Hi everyone well as I write this I am on my way to Tasmania for my first visit. I am pretty excited, it is always fun to travel and visiting somewhere new is always exciting. I am only there for a short visit, just a long weekend but I am sure it will be worthwhile. I will let you know next week.

Each week I put out the VMware newsletter and there has ben for a while now the sections you see below. I wanted to explain briefly what each section is. The Local Events section is where we place anything local to the newsletter. As I am in Brisbane for example I try and put anything that is happening in the next week or two in our city in this section that is being run by VMware. The local training classes are again local classes that VMware will be running directly in Brisbane in my case. There is a link to this which will allow you to see all of the courses and get more info or register if you wish. Next we have the VMware bloggers, this is a section for only VMware employees bloggers and can therefore be considered “official” VMware related information. We then have External Bloggers which is my collection of non VMware employee or official blogs that I follow and find useful, you are welcome to suggest others for me to use. The final section is always the KB Digest which is our weekly Knowledge Base articles which are of vital importance to the health and well being of your VMware environment.

I hope that gives you an idea of each section. Feel free to send me any comments or suggestions anytime.

Have a fantastic week.

VMware Cloud Ops Blog: Provide Transparency with an ITBM Service Costing Process (http://blogs.vmware.com/cloudops/?p=818)By Khalid Hakim Last week I wrote about the growing need for IT to provide cost transparency to the business, especially to support its transition to a service provider or broker model. I also outlined some of the problems caused by opaque, decentralized costing strategies. At VMware, we rely on an IT Business Management (ITBM) Service Costing Process (SCP) to help customers run IT like a business. Behind the acronyms lies a powerful tool that allows IT to validate its expenditures and solidify its role…

VMware vSphere Blog: When to Overcommit vCPU:pCPU for Monster VMs (http://blogs.vmware.com/vsphere/?p=11815)VMware’s conservative guidance about overcommitting your pCPU:vCPU ratio for Monster virtual machines is simple – don’t do it. Example: If you have a quad socket, 8 core host, this means you have 32 cores, or 64 SMT threads, which vSphere sees as potential logical CPUs. The actual largest monster virtual machine we’d recommend you create is 32 vCPUs for that host. Why is that? It is assumed you’ve assigned all those vCPUs because not only are they required by the application, but also that…

Office of the CTO Blogs: NFV – Transforming the Operational Model of the Network (http://cto.vmware.com/?p=2596)At Mobile World Congress in Barcelona today, Pat Gelsinger ( VMware CEO ) laid out a clear vision for the Software-Defined Data Center ( SDDC ) and how it encompasses Network Functions Virtualization ( NFV ). The solution really begins with the massive-scale Cloud Data Centers that serve as the “control room” for both mobile operators as well as enterprises around the world. SDDC extends common virtualization concepts — abstraction, pooling and automation — to all data center resources and services…

VMware vSphere Blog: vSphere Data Protection Backup to Tape (http://blogs.vmware.com/vsphere/?p=11716)One of the more common questions I get around vSphere Data Protection (VDP) and VDP Advanced is whether backup to tape is supported. Before I answer that question and discuss a possible solution, I want to dig into why that question comes up fairly often. As I am sure you know, tape has been around for decades for a variety of reasons. Some (not all) organizations who use tape typically have one or both of these requirements: Backup data must be kept offsite for disaster recovery and/or backup data must be…

VMware Support Insider: ALERT: Transfers fail after vCloud Connector 2.6 upgrade (http://blogs.vmware.com/kb/?p=6055)VMware has become aware of an issue wherein after upgrading to vCloud Connector 2.6, a change to the permissions on the staging directory causes transfers to fail. A newly installed vCloud Connector node has read/write/execute permissions for user, group, and other on the staging directory (777). When upgrading the node to vCloud Connector 2.6, these permissions are incorrectly set to 755. This removes the write permission for other, which in this instance references the admin user. VMware vSphere Blog: Security of the VMware Hypervisor – A Whitepaper (https://blogs.vmware.com/vsphere/?p=11710)Hi! I’m happy to announce the availability of a whitepaper that I had been working on much of the past year. Since I joined VMware back in January of 2013, an almost weekly request was for a whitepaper that help IT team explain the security of the VMware vSphere hypervisor, a.k.a. ESXi, to a security professional. Frequently, the IT folks would encounter statements like “How can we trust the hypervisor?” or “I’ve heard of this  VM Escape thing, what’s to stop a VM from corrupting or…

While these considerations continue to be top priorities, there is another question that seems to be coming up more and more: “What about vCenter?” vCenter has long been thought of as the constant, the unshakable foundation that supports business differentiators like vCAC. From the editors virtual desk

Hi everyone, I hope you have had as good a week as I have. I am currently on some annual leave in such a beautiful part of Australia, very close to Byron Bay. The weather has been awesome and I am having a fantastic time. I have been keeping up with many of the news items, not that I am just working but also relaxing. This week’s newsletter is jam packed with some excellent information for you so please read it as comprehensively as possible.

I am currently getting to grips with vCAC and ITBM which are technologies I am very interested in and with the growth of Hybrid Cloud believe they will become even more crucial to a successful datacenter that is managed across multiple boundaries in the future.

I hope you enjoy the newsletter and look forward to speaking to you again next week.

VMware End User Computing: Persistence Pays Off (http://blogs.vmware.com/euc/?p=5272)Guest blog by Lee Caswell, VP of Virtualization Products, Fusion-io Back when VDI started, the persistent desktop was king.  The first virtual desktop wasn’t that virtual at all since persistent hardware was dedicated to individual users.  But it was fast and it was secure. The downside of persistent desktops was cost.  Dedicated hardware gave way to shared storage and more efficient provisioning techniques, but the cost of a persistent desktop remained far above the cost of a physical desktop. …

I want to re-clarify how and when it should be used. As with many advanced settings, it can be helpful or hurtful. VMware vSphere Blog: Can an admin peek inside my VM? If your ESXi admin has root or full administrator privileges, they can do anything. Nobody should be surprised by this! HOWEVER, you can mitigate, limit and monitor what is being done. But first, let’s quickly review what is meant by “peek inside the guest”. In the human world,…

We meet this morning, all traveling from every corner of the U.S., to discuss several challenges that two of our clients are facing while making the cultural transition from traditional IT to service providers. Both clients are…

VMware vSphere Blog: Getting Started with the vSphere Distributed Switch (http://blogs.vmware.com/vsphere/?p=11827)When I joined the Technical Marketing team last September I was tasked with vCenter Availability and Scalability along with providing coverage for all things vCenter and SSO. Since that time I’ve branched out and am also covering Resource Management (more on this coming soon!) and also features in the Enterprise Plus SKU. I’m really excited about this as to this day one of my favorite and I feel underused features is the vSphere Distributed Switch, or VDS. To get started in the VDS series I wanted to…

  • VMware vSphere Blog: vSphere HA VM Monitoring – Back to Basics (http://blogs.vmware.com/vsphere/?p=12076)In my experience as a customer, partner and working for VMware, I’ve found HA VM monitoring to be an incredibly helpful feature that I am consistently surprised is not used more. It is easy to turn on, provides an additional layer of protection for your VMs and just works. So why don’t more people use it? I am not going to be able to answer that question in this post, though I hope to provide enough information to get more people to try it out. First I’d like to briefly discuss what HA VM monitoring…

VMware Accelerate: Taking IT Out of the Shadows (http://blogs.vmware.com/accelerate/?p=1916)by Barton Kaplan Wikipedia defines shadow IT as “systems and solutions built and used in organizations without explicit organizational approval…by departments other than the IT department.” It’s been a sore point for central IT organizations for a long time, and judging from the most recent data, it’s only getting worse. Gartner predicts that by 2015, 35 percent of technology spending will occur outside the central IT organization [1] . In a US$2.7 trillion industry [2] , that’s a big number.…

VMware vSphere Blog: PVSCSI and Large IO’s (http://blogs.vmware.com/vsphere/?p=12145)Here’s a behavior that a few people have questioned me about recently: Why is PVSCSI splitting my large guest operating system IO’s into smaller blocks? By default ESXi’s behavior is to pass IO’s from the guest operating system as large as 32MB with the LSI vSCSI adapter (as long as the actual guest operating system doesn’t have a small default transfer size: http://kb.vmware.com/kb/9645697 ). However, the PVSCSI vSCSI adapter was designed to pass only 512KB IO’s, or smaller, so anything…

From the editors virtual desk

Hi everyone and welcome to this weeks newsletter from Sunny Brisbane, Queensland. Yes I am back from my short holiday and have had an extremely productive week back, with a few small but manageable hiccups on the way. There has been so much news, updated products and other announcements over the past few weeks and the newsletters have reflected all of this new information so as usual I urge you to spend some time reading the posts that are provided and if you require further information do not hesitate to contact your VMware representative.

With the release of new technologies such as Virtual SAN you will start to notice that the weekly KB articles are also expanding to include these new technologies, some of the KB articles are information focused as well as potential items to be aware of so check them out.

Have a fantastic week.

VMware Horizon View graphics – vSGA vs vDGA (http://www.vmguru.nl/wordpress/?p=12225)As VDI solutions become more and more mainstream for standard office environments, a new challenge appears. We can swap the bulky desktop and replace it with a small thin client, delivering Windows desktops from the datacenter. Enabling a more flexible way of working with free seating, working at home. But how about those ‘special’ users who always get a ‘special’ workstation with high end graphic cards, dual monitor setup working with AutoCAD, Bentley MicroStation, etc? Can we deliver the high end…

From the editors virtual desk

Hi everyone and welcome to this weeks VMware newsletter. I have been focused around a number of customer initiatives, some of which are in the process of completing their upgrades to vSphere 5.5. This is a bit delayed for a few as they are in the throws of merging with another organisation which set them back in their timeline and they are now finding this to be a priority. It is an interesting jump as they have to move some hosts and vCenter Server from older versions like 4.0 which is at EOL to the new 5.5 platform and also ensure that other solutions such as SRM are upgraded at the same time. This has led me to think about the role that VMware and specifically vCenter Server has on an organisation and its ability to keep functioning in the case of an outage. With SRM we are in a great scenario but when we are required to do an upgrade or in this case a replacement there will be a period where the organisation may not have SRM installed. This puts them at rid, or does it. Having this conversation with one of the managers I asked him how often VM’s stopped working, it turns out that unless they have an operating system issue this rarely if ever occurs. Of course this does not mean that it won’t occur and tempting fate with a perfect storm of an outage at the same time that SRM is down is not an appropriate scenario, however the conclusion to this was that the risk was actually very low. In fact it was low enough for the business to recommend doing the upgrade with only an email message to the business owners giving them info on the potential outage window that could occur in the case of a catastrophic failure.

VMware technology is reliable, and organisations that maintain their virtual infrastructure and plan their upgrades careful, and try not fall too far behind are in a great position to upgrade with almost no impact to the organisation.

Have a great week everyone.

The latest story I frequently hear being pitched in IT circles is that of cloud IaaS Utopia. In this universe, workloads can simply move anywhere (between disparate providers and private data centers, for example) without consequence. From the editors virtual desk

Hi everyone, I hope you are all well and enjoying all the excellent VMware news of the week. I have spent much of this week working with my customers on their upgrades and have also spent some time on vCenter Operations Manager and working on custom dashboards for specific applications. I am very interested in operations management as many of you will know as I have had a long history with operational management solutions.

I am starting to look at vCAC and ITBM Standard a bit more. It is definitely a new area for me. I am very interested in bringing cost and saving visibility to the management of an organisation and I think that ITBM is perfectly positioned to do this. In addition to this vCAC provides the brokering services to what will become the next generation of services for the data centre from their own internal private cloud through to a multitude of external public cloud offerings of various forms, one of which may be the vCHS.

I will keep you updated with my progress in this exciting area.

VMware Accelerate: Big Data: Big Opportunity or Big Challenge? (http://blogs.vmware.com/accelerate/?p=1946)By Barton Kaplan We are undoubtedly living in the era of big data. For any doubters, McKinsey estimates that the amount of new data that enterprises around the world stored on disk drives in 2010 equaled 7 exabytes, growing at a compound annual rate of 40 percent. [1] The opportunities for enterprises to leverage this data abound, at least in theory. In the retail sector alone, McKinsey estimates that big data could raise operating margins by a whopping 60 percent. [2] And in US healthcare, the potential…

VMware Cloud Ops Blog: Forensic IT: Discover Issues Before Your End Users Do (http://blogs.vmware.com/cloudops/?p=852)by Paul Chapman, VMware Vice President Global Infrastructure and Cloud Operations If you’ve ever watched five-year-olds playing a soccer game, there is very little strategy: all the kids swarm the field and chase the ball trying to score a goal. Most IT departments take a similar sort of “swarming” approach to service incidents and problems when they occur. For most of my career, IT has been a reactive business: we waited until there was a problem and then scrambled very well to solve it. We were…

VMware vSphere Blog: What happened to that Hardening Guide setting? (https://blogs.vmware.com/vsphere/?p=12286)Hi! As usual, most of my blog posts come from customer or field questions. Here’s a new one crossed my path recently. A customer, running vSphere 5.1, was finding some anomalies within their VM’s. Their belief was that some of the vSphere Hardening Guide settings were causing it. When this was assigned to me, I noticed that they were referencing the vSphere 4.1 hardening guide! The customer was applying guidelines from the 4.1 guide against a 5.1 system. They believed that the guideline was still…

From the editors virtual desk

News of the week, have you been affected by Heartbleed? This seems to be the only thing on everyones mind right now, even some of my completely non techie friends have been asking me. So what is this all about Neil, I am worried about it and how it affects me. Its amazing how much interest there is in this issue and so there should be it is very serious. There has been some interesting advice from the paranoid, do not use the internet anymore or until everything is patched, however I have taken a different approach. Firstly as a techie I know that software isn’t perfect, lets face it what is. So for my entire online life which spans over 2 decades I have tarn a proactive approach, rather than being too cautions understand the risks and managing them accordingly. I use a proper password management service and try and ensure that all of my accounts have unique and as complex as they will allow passwords. This limits the attack surface of any potential hacker as we know as it means that he will not gain access to any other system based off a single system hack.

So what do I tell my customers. Well firstly they should not panic. I work with all of my customers to ensure that their systems are in good shape and adequately up to date with patches specifically security patches. As organisation do, we discuss security on a regular basis and their defence in depth approach is always looked at to ensure it is capable and adequate. When an issue such as this arises we ascertain the potential products that are at risk and then ascertain the risk level. Based on that we come up with an action plan which would take into account many factors including how important the system is, can we take it offline and many other things.

So the key is preparation, planning and above all do not have a knee jerk reaction, take a good look at the issue and analyse it with the correct intent for your organisations assets and provide recommendations based on that.

Our official KB for this issue is reflected here and I suggest that you have a look at the affected products and discuss how this may relate to your individual organisations circumstances and adopt a security posture to this issue accordingly.

VMware Cloud Ops Blog: SDDC: Changing Organizational Cultures (http://blogs.vmware.com/cloudops/?p=869)By Tim Jones I like to think of SDDC as “service-driven data center” in addition to “software-defined data center.” The vision for SDDC expands beyond technical implementation, encompassing the transformation from IT shop to service provider and from cost center to business enabler. The idea of “service-driven” opens the conversation to include the business logic that drives how the entire service is offered. Organizations have to consider the business processes that form the basis of what to…

[Anyone Has a Problem Using the Right Mouse Click on Android. I am using JellyBean and the right mouse button is moving the VDI image ot the Horizon View backwards instead of Properties]

Hello? I am Sam from Anu Information and Communications(parksh@anuit.co.kr)   Wondering has anyone had a problem using the right mouse button on Android? It seems that if you click on the right mouse button it seems to moving back instead of showing the user the property of the Vmware View(VDI Computer image). It has stated that there should be no known issues regarding the right hand mouse click(it  is currently setting the Android device to Backwared).  According to the article on . https://www.vmware.com/support/viewclients/doc/horizon-view-client-android-release-notes.html#keyfeatures  I could no find any problem of so what? The keyboard shortcut for the right-mouse click  "Shift + F10" seems to be working fine. Wondering if there is an option on the "Settings.apk" that I have missed on the Android JellyBean configuration or that there is function on the Vmware View client login that I have missed.? Or  do I have to set some parameters on  vCenter, vTransfer Server on ESXi, Active Directory with Windows Server 2008 R2 on the HP Proliant 360 in order to have that functionality implemented? It could be a problem "USB redirection" of mouse of the image and the Android device?   We have tried using Microsoft Remote Client(Android apk) and it works perfectly(The right mouse click and Korean-English conversion key). This is telling me that there are no problems with using the external mouse with the right-mouse button click, since it had been starting to support since ICS(Ice Cream Sandwich). I forgot to mention, regading the Korean- English conversion it is the alt key on right-bottom of the keyboard. I have installed a English Win7 image made as a templated redistributed with "Automated Pool?"  Does this mean I need to have the Korean Win7 installed to make sure that the positioning of the alt key is matched with the VDI image?

I have loaded Hypervisor 5.5. on an HP ML 310 Gen8 v2 now when I go to load my first opsystem from the hp branded medial MS 2012 R2 standard it tells me It cant see the machine BIOS and wont load in my first virtual machine

Help!! Is there a way that I can set up the virtual machine to let the media see the machine bios or a work around.  the vmware image was from hp's site and worked well tell this point.

Create a heat map for different storage tiers

$

Thought this would be an easy one but as usual I was wrong!

I would like to create a two 2-column dashboard for all of one specific type of storage (in this case by the name we labeled we the datastore...)

First, I want to create a resource type widget for all of the datacenters

Second a heat map widget that will show when commands per second is good trending to not so good.

The heat map widget should be a receiver from the Resources widget so when I select datacenter A the status of the datastore will be a displayed in the heat map widget

For the Resources widget I have filtered by Resource Kinds Cluster Compute Resources

Changed the interactions so that Resources is the Providing Widget to the heat map (receiveing widget)

For the heat map widget I have s selected group by cluster compute resource then by datastore, mode is instance, resource kinds is cluster compute resources, attribute kind is comands per second

So the first issue...when I select on any cluster in the resources widget, all of the clusters show up not just the one of intrest

Second I only want a specifc type of storage so I thought I could go in and manually select to filter on just the datastores (Select which tags to filter |DataStores| specifc datastores) and when I save it in the heat map widget "No data available" shows up...regardless of which clustert I select in the resources widget!

If I remove the tage which I am filtering on then all of datastores show up in the heatmap (cps_fail_less)

Any ideas a) how to get the interaction to work correctly so just a single, interesting cluster shows up in the heat map b) how to filter for just the interesting datastores not all of the datastores in the cluster

Let me know if I need to provide more info for you you to help me out!  Thanks!

Alarm action triggering on Green->Red but not Red-Green

Our alarm 'Host connection and power state' is getting triggered at least once a week due to networking issues. The alarm action is to send an email for all state changes (green-yellow, yellow-red, red->yellow, yellow-green). The strange thing is we only get an email alert for when it turns red. The object turns back to green and the logs say that the alarm has gone back to green, but the alarm never sends us the email

e.g.

Alarm 'Host connection and power state' on xxxx changed from Green to Red 13/04/2014 7:08:58 p.m.

Alarm 'Host connection and power state' on xxxx triggered an action 13/04/2014 7:08:58 p.m.

Alarm 'Host connection and power state' on xxxx sent email to (our email address) 13/04/2014 7:09:30 p.m.

Established a connection 13/04/2014 7:13:55 p.m. xxxx

Alarm 'Host connection and power state' on xxxx changed from Red to Green 13/04/2014 7:13:55 p.m.

Get-AlarmDefinition "Host connection and power state" | Get-AlarmAction | select ActionType,Trigger | fl

     ActionType : SendEmail

     Trigger    : {Yellow -> Red (Once), Yellow -> Green (Once), Red -> Yellow (Once)}

System Requirements for Virtual Servers

Hi,

I am learning VMWare and recently purchased a

HP Proliant DL360 G5 Server Quad Core E5410 2x2.33GHz 4GB 2x73GB 10K P400i 2PS Server. I am going to install ESXi 5.5 and wanted to know how many VMs can I create on this server (Just roughly). I am going to use this for my test environment at home to install Windows Server 2012 R2, XenApp 7.5, XenDesktop 7.5. So, I just wanted to know whether this configuration will be enough with the CPU, Memory and HardDisk?

Thank you in advance!
