Mouse not working - vsphere 6.5 WEB CONSOLE and REMOTE CONSOLE using web browser via RDP/MSTSC session - Stop the madness

Hi all

When connecting to vcenter 6.5 appliance as well as directly to an ESXI host via web browsers in a windows RDP remote desktop/mstsc , the mouse becomes unavailable/stops working both WEB CONSOLE and the REMOTE CONSOLE.

I have tried Firefox, Chrome and IE - Same issue

I have tried both Windows 2008 R2 and Windows 2012 -Same issue

This happens in the console which opens in a separate browser window.

This all used to work quite fine in vsphere version 6 and all versions below.

KB articles suggest installing vmware tools BUT here is the issues:

It's all very well to say 'install vmware tools' but how (apart from battling with a keyboard in windows) do you install or complete the installation WITHOUT THE  MOUSE ???

What has changed ? And why ?

Does some kind soul have a fix for this or know if there's and update for this issue?

****** AN UPDATE : this issue occurs throughout installation and persists until vmware tools is installed.

I have to use the keyboard all the way through installation and then to complete the vmware tools installation.

Once vmware tools is installed the mouse works again.

I would appreciate if someone knows of a fix for this and also whther or not this issue is fixed in vcenter 6.5b and esxi 6.5 a versions.

I look forward to any replies or comments.

2 Questions about IT..

Not able to understand the IT job market?

I wanted to do know if Middlesex University's Network Management & Cloud Post Graduate Program, Is the program worthy of network or cloud related jobs ?

Is the content of the program is any good for a job in Cloud or Networking industry to begin with ?

Also I'm confised between doing certifications or Masters degree because I am truly confused about the job market and the education required for it.

I see same jobs having different educational/vendor cert requirements and vice versa, how is it possible to study all vendor certification to just find 1 suitable job, for example network admin, some ask for Cisco, some ask for Microsoft Certs, some ask for Juniper, some ask for others, if I were to choose Cloud, then some ask for VMWare Cloud, some ask for MCSE Cloud, some ask for AWS, some ask for Google and some for Cisco Cloud, and to my amazement some ask for all of these with 8+ years of experience. In some cases some ask for a mixed bag of certs,

What I am not able to understand is how can i do all of these certifications (if I do just some certifications I might not even get a job, and I know of people who never did any of these certifications and they work as IT Solutions Manager or something) with the cost per course being so much, that I actually compared the total cost of VMWare (from Basic to just Professional, NOT advanced Professional) certification of Cloud with a Masters degree in cloud, the masters degree actually cost less that of certs but nobody asks for the degree.

For a new person to join the industry in its very confusing and frightening.

Any help or insight is definitely appreciated.

Changing LUN ID on UNITY SAN and how will it affect VMware hosts

$

I have 4x VMware V6.0 hosts and found that the various LUNs on our UNITY SAN are presented to the hosts with differing LUN IDs, so, for example, LUN "Datastore01" is presented to VMware hosts 01 & 03 as LUN ID 1 and to VMware hosts 02 & 04 as LUN ID 2. According to this VMware article ()https://emcservice.force.com/CustomersPartners/kA2j0000000R5g3CAC .

I wanted to ask if I can simply change the LUN ID of each LUN from the SAN and will this flow thru to the host automatically or do I have to remove the LUN from the host, change the LUN ID, then add the LUN back to the host?

Thanks.

Windows 10 Start menu stops working after Windows 10 LTSB 2016 March Cumulative Update

$

Hello,

Not sure if anyone else is experiencing this, but we are currently using a floating non-persistent pool running Windows 10 LTSB 2016 build (Build 1607). We are running App Volumes 2.12, and using both Appstacks and Writable Volumes UIA+profile template to support certain user-installed apps.

Starting last month, after updating the parent image with the latest cumulative update and creating a test pool to test out the changes with existing appstacks and writables, I found out that the start menu has stopped working altogether. Clicking on the start button doesn't show the menu at all. Curiously, clicking on the Search button does bring up the search menu.

The Event Logs seem to indicate that Microsoft.Windows.ShellExperienceHost AppX Package has been broken, with the following messages recorded on Application event log and Event Viewer -> Applications and Services Logs\Microsoft\Windows\Apps\Microsoft-Windows-TWinUI/Operational log every time I clicked on the start button.

Activation of app Microsoft.Windows.ShellExperienceHost_cw5n1h2txyewy!App failed with error: Invalid value for registry See the Microsoft-Windows-TWinUI/Operational log for additional information.

Activation of the app Microsoft.Windows.ShellExperienceHost_cw5n1h2txyewy!App for the Windows.Launch contract failed with error: Invalid value for registry.

I have already tried to re-register the Microsoft.Windows.ShellExperienceHost and Microsoft.Windows.Cortana AppX Packages, as it seems to be one of the remediation suggestions over the web, but alas, it didn't work. The powershell I tried running under elevated powershell prompt are:

Get-AppXPackage -Name Microsoft.Windows.ShellExperienceHost | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

Get-AppXPackage -Name Microsoft.Windows.Cortana | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

I tried to reset the TileDataLayer database too by stopping the State Repository and Tile Data Model server services, and deleting off the %localappdata%\TileDataLayer folder and let it recreate it, but no luck so far.

Because of this, I am stuck on leaving the Windows 10 build on 14393.693, which is based on January cumulative update. Also, this problem is still present with the recently released April cumulative update.

Anyone else having this problem?

Getting total resources of a request

$

Hi

I would like to build a VRO workflow to be used as part of working out if there is sufficient resources available to approve a request. So I need to be able to look at all currently approved requests and work out the total cpu and memory requested. I've been able to get current requests but am not sure how to easily obtain the total required. It appears to me that the request data of the catalog request only has information that is different then the blueprint (which is easily obtained as a JSON structure). The issue is I'm not sure how to convert the request data into a JSON format. Alternatively is there another way?

I figure that VRA must somehow work this out for its costing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

cheers,

Jakub

Hello,

Until now I used the precompiled SDK\vsphere-ws\java\JAXWS\lib\vim25.jar for delopment. Now, I need some classes from ...vim25.mo.* and they are not included in the precompiled jar. I recompiled it using the provided build.bat file, but no success.

Do you have a tipp where I can find them and how to include them into my Java projects?

Since 'downgrading' to El Capitan, the VM won't connect to the host OS. All of the share settings are the same as before. The host can 'see' the VM server, and read & write it's virtual drive, but not vice versa. Anyone have solution?

Hi,

I have installed vCenter 6.5.0....I install the base, and it works fine. Then I try to install the 6.5.0a patch and it gets to the VCS Server Manager and I get an error 1603 - Installation of component VCS Service Manager failed check your logs. I actually completely reformatted my server and reinstalled the OS thinking it was an issue with it, but still no go. I am using local system account and embedded database. Any ideas? the vCenter server is in DNS and I am able to ping it by name. Thanks.

ESXi 6.5 host freezing/crashing when shutting down VM with GPU passthrough

$

Hello,

I've had this issue on my ESXi host since version 6. I have an AMD Radeon 6450 GPU set as a passthrough device to a specific VM. Everything works great except for when that particular VM is powered off. The ESXi host freezes/stops responding and must be hard power cycled to get it operational again. I did some research and it appears that it's a problem with the hypervisor sending a reset to the PCI-E bus not executing properly during power off. This isn't an issue when the VM is just rebooting (not full power off).

I was hoping upgrading to ESXi 6.5 would resolve this issue but alas, it hasn't.

Here are more specifics regarding my host:

* Supermicro X9SRL-F Server Motherboard

* Intel Xeon E5-2690 CPU

* 32GB DDR3 RAM (not ECC)

* 8TB of local storage connected via an LSI MegaRAID 9240-8i controller

* AMD Radeon 6450 GPU

Any guidance on this issue would be greatly appreciated. I've seen some suggestions on dropping down to ESXi 5.5 but I would prefer not doing that!

Thanks,

Chris

Prevent VM provisioning from the Content Library

Hi All,

I need to prevent VM provisioning from the Content Library for a user.

However, it looks like the operation 'Deploy OVF template' is run by VSPHERE.LOCAL\vpxd-<GUID> account. As a result, the user is able to provision a new VM regardless removing the following role privileges:

  • Virtual machine.Inventory.Create new
  • Virtual machine.Inventory.Create from existing
  • And all privileges in Virtual machine.Provisioning.

The problem exists for both vSphere 6.0 and 6.5.

I was wondering if anyone ran across this issue before and has any ida about the workaround.

vcloud director 8.20 file upload fails

We are deploying a new Vcloud Director 8.20 for SP cell and are having a issue uploading files. I see the file get uploaded to the server nfs share and it shows 100% in the upload task, but only 1% on the catalog status page. This is the error I get every time.

[ df994315-e6c8-4151-ab9b-a7bfdd41c80c ] Internal Server Error

- java.net.SocketTimeoutException: connect timed out

- java.net.SocketTimeoutException: connect timed out

- connect timed out

Looking through the logs I see the following

at java.lang.Thread.run(Thread.java:745)

Caused by: java.io.IOException: java.net.SocketTimeoutException: connect timed out

three or four times. . I am also seeing this in the logs.

No active collaboration found for task VDC_UPLOAD_MEDIA(com.vmware.vcloud.entity.task

No enabled endpoints for task VDC_UPLOAD_MEDIA

Currently there is only one datastore and it is shared to all my hosts. I reconnected vcenter and even tried different credentials.

Here is the succeeded upload and below is what I see in the catalog status. It never gets past on percent before it errors out.

I have tried files from 10KB up to 3Gb thinking it was a file size limitation. Every time it ends with this error usually in less then a minute.

I am out of ideas. Please let me know.

Thanks

BUG: VMware shared folders: writing files using memory mapped I/O produces files full of 0 bytes

$
0
0

When modifying files on a VMware workstation shared folder (i.e. \\vmware-host\... using vmhgfs.sys) via memory mapped I/O (e.g. CreateFileMapping/MapViewOfFile) the updated content is lost if the range is not forced out using FlushViewOfFile before the view is unmapped.

This explicit flush should not be needed per UnmapViewOfFile function (Windows). The content should get written anyway when the page's share count hits 0 (the page has been unmapped from all processes that were sharing it), and it works as expected on local volumes like C: and also on network volumes over SMB.

MapViewOfFile.cpp (attached) is a simple test app which demonstrates the bug. When run, it writes "Hello, World!" to the file hello.txt in the current working directory. If you run it in a folder on C:, or on a network share, this works fine. If copy it into a folder on \\vmware-host\Shared Folders and run it, it fails; the file is created with the correct size but it just contains '\0' bytes. If you uncomment the call to FlushViewOfFile, the file will show the correct content. But (obviously) one can't easily patch arbitrary windows applications to do extra flushing that the API doesn't require, so this isn't a solution, just a workaround.

This  test app is of course very synthetic, but I originally encountered it with real programs. Specifically, I was trying to set up some older Visual Studio versions inside VMware. I wanted to use Unity mode to have the IDE still appear in my normal start menu as if it was installed in the host, while isolating isolate the actual compiler installation that things like COM registration could be managed using snapshots and rollback. To make this feel even more transparent, I created symlinks to redirect paths in the guest's C: drive to their corresponding \\vmware-host\Shared Folders\... equivalent, so the same paths referred to the same files in both the host and guest (e.g. mklink /D C:\projects \\vmware-host\Shared Folders\projects, which is sharing the hosts's C:\projects). When I did this, everything worked great except the visual studio link.exe, which failed with strange messages that look like uninitialized memory. I finally tracked this down to the .exp and .lib files (which are written using memory mapped I/O) being full of 0s instead of their real content, which presumably caused some buffer-handling mishap when link.exe read them back in. I then created MapViewOfFile so I could give you a far-simpler testcase for the vmhgfs.sys bug :-)

NSX DLR

I have the below scenario in my design.

  • 2 Data Center - DC1 & DC2
  • DC1 - Primary & DC2 - DR
  • NSX Manger & vCenter in each DC with 1:1 ratio mapping

In DC 1 have a network configured under DLR 100.100.100.0/24

This network is advertised from DC 1 in normal scenario using OSPF (OSPF between NSX <-> Phyical routers)

I want to use the same network in my DC 2 as DR. i.e the network should be configured in DC 2 but route should not be advertised from DC2.

When DC 1 goes down, the same network should be advertised from DC2.

To achieve this , from my understanding I need to do the following.

  1. Configure DC2 DLR with the same network (100.100.100.0/24) with the LIF as 100.100.100.1 & advertise via OSPF.
  2. The interface  should be in down state so that it does not advertise the routes.
  3. When I need to bring up the DC 2 (assuming DC1 is down) I need to enable the DLR LIF to up state so that the network (100.100.100.0/24) is advertised from DC 2.

Let me know if the above is possible. If it is possible i would like to know how to achieve this. Mainly how to keep the LIF in down state & how to enable it when required.
