Identify VM causing high write load at specific time.

Hi All,

I'm (still) using vCops 5.8.5.

I have a host that is experiencing very high write spikes to a specific datastore at specific times.

There are 50 VMs on the host and as a lazy admin I don't want to have to review the write load for each VM at that specific time.

How can I create a graph / report that show which VM was generating the high write activity at the specific time.

I have the advanced mode license for vCops so can use the custom login or standard - which ever will help me produced the info I need.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks.

Controlling VM hardware identification for software licensing purposes ?

$

I am experimenting with VMware Fusion on a Mac. I have noticed that in the VMs I create, a number of MS Windows third party software packages are rejecting my licenses of their products, as if they identify the VM as being tied to different hardware. This applies even to my BOOTCAMP partition installed on my system drive when used directly.

When software queries the hard drive serial number of a VM, or queries the MAC address of a VM, then what response is given to the software? Is there a way to control the response? Is the response different for direct NTFS partitions on a hard drive than it is for virtual disks?

MS Windows itself was refusing my Windows 8 Pro Activation Key on all the virtual disks I tried, saying it was already in use. It did accept my activation key on my use-directly BOOTCAMP partition.

The other software products I have had difficulty licensing so far are mostly from IOBIT (e.g., Advanced System Care Pro; IOBIT Maleware Detector); I have not tried installing much else yet.

I have gone through all of the Settings for VMs. I looked over the documentation for Fusion Pro but I did not see anything related to this mentioned as an additional capacity of Pro. It seems likely to me that some control facility must be built in to the high end vSphere products to permited fully virtualized servers, but is there any configurability at the Fusion or Fusion Pro level?

(My use case is as a retired technical volunteer looking at expanding my advice range to Windows users of the software package that is my major interest; there are often questions about various compiler combinations with various package release versions, so it would be useful to have several distinct VMs I could attach to in order to better emulate user environments. So I am more or less a product support person, but have no budget for re-buying infrastructure programs and so need all the VMs to identify as if I were directly booted.)

No ping Host to Guest

I hope someone can provide some support here. On a Windows 10 Pro desktop, installed VMware Workstation Pro. I downloaded Windows Server 2016 tp5 and install it into the VMware infrastructure. The symptoms I am about to describe are apparent in both Nano server and desktop experience. The server boots fine logs into the network I can ping inside and outside the network to websites on the outside and to other devices on the inside.

What I cannot do is ping the VM guest from The Host. The VM network connection is bridged.

I have troubleshooted the VM, The Host, the routing device, and everything appears to be okay.

I have logs and screenshots available if you need them. You are also welcome to remote into the machine so you can see for yourself.

Any support I can get I would appreciate.

Thanks and regards

vSphere ESX 5.5 Cluster - DSWITCH - VLAN - No network traffic if the VM is placed on Host 02. If placed on Host 01 network works perfectly.

First an overview of the environment:

  - Cluster of 2 machines.

  - Host 01 & Host 02

My Network:

     - DSWITCH INTERNET

          - HOST 01 & HOST 02 added to the DSwitch.

          - UPLINKS = HOST 01 - vmnic 1 & HOST 02 - vmnic 1

          - DPORT Group INTERNET

               - VM Pfsense

     - DSWITCH VLAN

            - HOST 01 & HOST 02 added to the DSwitch..

            - UPLINKS = None

            - DPORT Group TRUNK ( VLAN trunk range: 0-4094 )

               - VM Pfsense

          - DPORT Group - VLAN - 100

               - VM CentOS 7 machine

Physical Switch has no VLAN tagging assigned.

the VM pfsense, is places on the ESX01 host.

the VM CentOS 7, is places on the ESX02 host.

My problem is, when i place the VM CentOS 7 machine on the second host (Host 02) there will be no network connection with the VM pfsense machine.

If i place the VM CentOS 7 machine on the same host as the VM pfsense (Host 01), then the network is up and running.

The Pfsense machine, is configured for the VLANS connections.

Why is the VLAN working when i place the VMś on the same Host, and not when i place the VM CentOS 7 on the other Host?

SRM: peer arrays at the recovery site; consistency groups

$

1 When you use array-based replication, one or more storage arrays at the protected site replicate data to peer arrays at the recovery site.

Это что значит, что каждый массив на основном сайте должен иметь пару на резервном? Они должны быть одинаковы? А что нельзя иметь на основном сайте 3 массива, а на резервном всего один, но чтобы на него все 3 реплицировались с основного?

2 If your storage array supports consistency groups, Site Recovery Manager is compatible with vSphere Storage DRS and vSphere Storage vMotion

consistency groups - не могу найти определение и описание этого понятия, что это такое и зачем? почему без этого vSphere Storage DRS and vSphere Storage vMotion не будут работать?

3 You must install an appropriate SRA on the  Site Recovery Manager Server hosts at the protected and recovery sites

что значит Site Recovery Manager Server hosts? какой хост? В смысле SRA должен быть проинсталирован на ВМ где установлен SRM-server?

SRM Array-based replication

Can be different versions on each site. You can use different versions of the same type of storage array on each site. The  Site Recovery Manager Server instance on each site requires the appropriate storage replication adapter (SRA) for each version of storage array for that site. Check SRA compatibility with all versions of your storage arrays to ensure compatibility.

Popping audio using Workstation 12 with Windows 10 guest.

Host is a Dell M6600 Precision Laptop running XUbuntu 14.04 LTS with VMWare Workstation 12.0

Guests that are running Linux and Windows 7 don't seem to have any sound issues at all.

I have one guest that runs Windows 10.  The audio on that guest has lots of issues.

When any sound is played many times there is hissing, crackling, and popping before and after the sound is played.

For longer playing sounds there is pops and crackling during playback.

The sound crackles about ever 5 seconds or so.

Curious if anybody else has seen this behavior and if they managed to correct it somehow.

vRA7/vRO7 : Property Dictionary - with External Values

$

Dears i have a situation that am created a new property in the property dictionary with external value which will be driven by a custom script action from vrealize orchestrator.

Am using the refernce of vrealize automation 7 release note which states:

In vRealize Automation 7.0, the property definitions no longer use the attributes. You must recreate the property definition or configure the property definition to use a vRealize Orchestrator script action rather than the embedded control types or attributes.

Workaround: Migrate the control type or attributes to vRealize Automation 7.0 using a script action.

    1. In vRealize Orchestrator, create a script action that returns the property values. The action must return a simple type. For example, return strings, integers, or other supported types. The action can take the other properties on which it depends as an input parameter. For information about creating script actions, see the vRealize Orchestrator documentation.
    2. In vRealize Automation, configure the product definition.

                    a. Select Administration> Property Dictionary> Property Definitions.

                    b. Select the property definition and click Edit.

                    c. From the the Display advice drop-down menu, select Dropdown

                    d. From the Values drop-down menu, select External Values

                    e. Select the script action.

                    f. Click OK

                    g. Configure the Input Parameters that are included in the script action. To preserve the existing relationship, bind the parameter to the other property.

                    h. Click OK

After i created the action script and configure everything as stated in the above paragraph. When am trying to test it it shows loading and no values are listed for the user to choose from (Am using this in normal blueprint). but when am testing the action script with ASD it works. i don't want to use ASD . i want to use the properyt definitions with external value. Could anyone help me correct my action script to work with property definition and external value .

Here is my action script:

var arr = new Array();

arr.push("Windows 2008 64bit");

arr.push(Windows 2012 64bit");

return arr;

Kindly could anyone provide me a support to solve this issue with property definitions and external values with vRealize Automation 7 and vRealize Orchestrator 7 ??

Windows 10 and high DPC/ISR times under Workstation 12.

$

I'm experiencing high DPC/ISR times in Windows 10 running under Workstation 12 on XUbuntu 14.04 LTS.

This mostly manifests itself in audio related tasks.  Playing music files in Windows 10 results in popping and crackling of the output audio.  Using Skype results in a Max Headroomesque experience for the other party.  The other side of the connection says that my audio cuts out and repeats.

Removing  [ sound.virtualDev = "hdaudio" ] from the vmx file vastly improves the audio but still leaves plenty of popping and crackling.

Running LatencyMon from Resplendence Software - LatencyMon: suitability checker for real-time audio and other tasks shows plenty of issues with DPC and ISR execution times.

My other virtual machines, running Linux, do not seem to experience these issues.  I'm able to play audio from the Linux guests with no issues and performance does not appear to be an issue with Linux guests.

Has anybody else experienced these issues and have you found any solutions?

moving a mirage client to a new Mirage cluster

Hi

Our client is moving to new vsphere provider and they want to build a new Mirage platform. How easy is it to move the existing reference machine and clients to the new cluster? (all Win 7 SP1 x64)

They don't want to import any of the CVD or layer info from the old cluster. Can we just change a reg key on the clients so that they show up on the new system and we can accept them there? Current platform is 5.6 and the new one will be 5.8

Thanks

Request: Restore a CVD from WinPE to Windows

Currently we have to install a blank Windows Image before we can restore a device (eg broken hard drive) booting up with WinPE.

It would be easy to deploy an image directly from Mirage, booting up with WinPE, and then restoring from there. All the necessary drivers would be included and it would be so much easier and faster.

Prioritizing voice traffic inside the vDS switch for Lync/Skype/sip/dscp values/tagging

$

Dear Experts!

I'm posting this today because I have looked and failed to find any content on this subject.  Within ESXi 6.0 and above we have now been blessed with the feature of marking/tagging traffic with either a CoS value or a DSCP value.  I think this is great, however there doesn't seem to be any traffic prioritization for said marked/tagged traffic.  You can allow or deny the traffic which is a good feature but I think what most people will be looking for is the ability to prioritize tagged traffic over everything else.  This is sometimes essential for real-time protocols like sip and rtp which is used by Skype for Business or Lync.

Lets compare with a physical Juniper EX range switch.  Here we setup a filter to detect traffic marked with a DSCP value of 46.  The switch firewall filter then pushes this traffic into the expedited forwarding queue.  So as we can see traffic prioritization is occurring here.  So my question, or discussion is, where is this ability within VMware's vDS switch/dvPortgroup?

Thanks

vmware-vpxd service cannot start after importing Machine SSL certificate

Hi people,

I have implemented vCenter Server 6 WEB appliance and tried to import self signed SSL Machine certificate, in order to access on vCenter web interface using that certificate for HTTPS. Certificate was signed by Windows Server 2008 CA with template configured using these instrustions: Creating a Microsoft Certificate Authority Template for SSL certificate creation in vSphere 6.0 (2112009) | VMware KB. Also, I tried to import Comodo Trial Positive SSL certificate with same issue - couldn't import it.

I used the VMCA script for certificate management and also tried to import them manually using this procedure: vSphere 6.0 Documentation Center. In both cases, process crashed during vmware-vpxd service restarting process. VMCA script exited with rolling-back old certificates. After trying to manual replace certificates using commands certool and vecs-cli, I tried to start vmware-vpxd service using command service vmware-vpxd start. It produced following output:

PowerCLI Q: Storing a VM's virtual hard disk files into folders in Datastore

Hello all,

I know how to create VMs in different folder structure in vSphere. This question is more on how to create those VM's virtual harddisk inside different folders in the datastore.

This is the scenario. I have 50 VMs in a folder called "Ops", (VMNames: Ops-01, Ops-02, ...),  another 50 under "Dev" (VMnames: Dev-01, Dev-02...) and so on in vSphere. However, when I browse our datastore (DS1), right now, all the VM's virtual harddisks reside under each VMname's folder at the root level of the datastore DS1, like so:

Folder names under DS1

Ops-01

Ops-02 ...

Ops-50

Dev01

Dev-02... etc

The respective vmdk files and other vm related files are under each of the above folders.

What I am looking for is, instead of all the Ops VMs under teh DS1 root, how can I create a folder called OPS, and have the respective VM folders (Ops-01, Ops-02...) inside that folder; likewise all the Dev-01, Dev02 folder under another parent folder called DEV, which would be under DS1.

I know there is a Get-Datastore command to use in the New-VM command, but that is not taking in a folder structure. Any help is highly appreciated.

NFS storage won't connect over custom TCP/IP stack

I’m trying to build out a new vSphere 6 environment (DR site). All is going well except NFS storage. I have created a separate TCP/IP stack for NFS and associated the appropriate vmk port to it. I can reach the storage with the vmkping command.

vmkping ++netstack=NFS X.X.X.X –d –s 8972

When I try to mount the storage I get an error that the ESXi host could not reach the NFS server. I have double checked all settings and paths. I tried adding a static route from the ESXi host to the storage network but received an error stating that the route already existed under another stack (expected). The vmotion netstack operates without a problem and when I remove the vmk and add it back under the default TCP/IP stack, it mounts the storage successfully. Any ideas what I might be missing?
