Failed to connect to VMware Lookup Service

$

Ciao a tutti.

Qualche suggerimento?

vro-configure.sh documentation

I'm looking to deploy and configure clean vRO 7 on demand for part of a pipeline for automated testing on completion of test remove it.

It seems easy enough to deploy with ovftool and for configuring it, I've found vro-configure.sh appears to offer the functionality to configure vRO Control Center, I've not yet been able to find any documentation for how to use some of the options.

Up to now I have it adding trusted certificate for vcenter,

     ./vro-configure.sh trust --certificate /tmp/vcenter.darrylcauldwell.local.pem --sso-certificate.

Am looking now to add vCenter PSC for authentication,  the authentication options are authentication-cafe, authentication-embedded and authentication-openldap,  my assumption is authentication-cafe is the tool which manages external authentication which is not LDAP.

The ./vro-configure.sh help shows three mandatory parameters,  if I specify these the command runs without error but authentication is not configured

     ./vro-configure.sh authentication-cafe --registry-url https://vcenter.darrylcauldwell.local/cm --sso-vco-admin-group administrators --sso-vco-admin-group-domain vsphere.local

or

     ./vro-configure.sh authentication-cafe --registry-url vcenter.darrylcauldwell.local --sso-vco-admin-group administrators --sso-vco-admin-group-domain vsphere.local

Is there any documentation or examples of syntax for how to use vro-configure.sh ?

vCloud Director 5.5.5 .ISO file uploads fail on Mozilla Firefox

I'm having an issue where uploading an .ISO to a catalog is failing.  The transfer progress box pops up and goes immediately to failed at 0%.  This happens on Firefox (using latest - v46.0.1).  The upload is successful if I use Chrome (using latest - v51.0).  Looking at the version of CIP that's being used I see that Firefox is using 5.5 and Chrome 5.6.  Not sure if this has anything to do with it or why they would be using different versions.  vCenter is 5.5 U3b and both Firefox and Chrome use CIP 5.6 for it.  Anyone know why the different version of CIP for vCD and why we can't upload .ISO's with Firefox?  Just a pain for users (and of course they complain like it's the end of the world) to have to use Chrome for the .ISO upload (consoles don't work so still need Firefox for every day use).

Replace machine certificate with VMCA signed certificate which has multiple alternate names

Hello,

i have successful replaced the VMCA CA certificate but when generating the machine certificate it seems not be possible to enter multiple hostnames:

In this KB article: VMware KB: Using certool to generate CSRs that include multiple DNS names for one host

i can read that i should modify the certool.cfg as follows:

Hostname = server.acme.com,server,192.168.1.1

But when i try to sign the certificate i got:

certool --gencert --cert=new-vmca-ssl.crt --privkey=ssl-key.priv --config=certool.cfg

Using config file : certool.cfg

Error: 70061, VMCAGetSignedCertificatePrivate() failedStatus : Failed

Error Code : 70061

Error Message : Invalid Subject Alternate Name specified.

I want that the browser gives no error when entering the IP or only the hostname without fqdn, because this i need more subject alternate names.

Hope someone has a hint for me...

Kind regards

Stefan

vSphere replication 6.1.1 seems much slower than vSphere replication 1.0

We upgraded our vSphere system from 5.0 to 6.0 update 2.  For this we also went to vSphere replication 6.1.1 and SRM 6.1.

Because of some complexities with the upgrade, we just started over, so our upgrade process was this:

Pause all vSphere replications under the 5.0 system using the C# client in the SRM plugin.

At DR site move all replicated machines (30) to a subfolder called \Replication, so when we Stop and remove replication at the HQ this data will not be deleted and we can use it as seeds.

Stop all vSphere replications at the source (HQ).

Tear down all protection groups and plans in SRM.

Completely uninstall SRM at source and HQ.

Power off and delete the VRMS and vSphere replication virtual appliances at HQ and DR sites.

Unregister vSphere replication at HQ and DR site using the web url to go to the Extentions.

Reboot both vCenter servers.

Upgrade HQ vCenter server to 6.0 update 2 and install VUM.

Upgrade DR vCenter server to 6.0 update 2 and install VUM.

Deploy new vR Replication 6.1.1 ovf appliance at both HQ and DR site.  Had to fuddle with a new ip pools thing on our dVswitch - not something we ever had to do before, but once I figured it out they were able to power on.

Go to the web management interface of each vR server and configure it with the new vsphere.local admin user credentials and accept the non trusted certificate.

Install SRM 6.1 on HQ site.

Install SRM 6.1 on DR site.

In new ESXi 6.0 web client pair the HQ and DR sites, providing proper credentials to the @drvsphere.local site.

Rebuild our 30 VM replications, carefully repointing the replicated data folder to the appropriate VM subfolder under \Replicated - where we moved the data earlier.  Configure it to utilize the data found there as seed copies.

Rebuild our SRM protection groups and recovery plans.

Ok so far things seem so good, but I was wondering why the new 6.1.1 vSphere replication isn't maxing out our WAN bandwidth that we have allocated to it.  Before with vSphere replication 1.0 we could easily peak at 80mbps max (that we allocated via QoS on the Cisco 2901 wan router to match tcp ports 44046 and 31031).  We have 100mbps link to our remote site so we've always had to use the Cisco QoS feature to control this bandwidth.  Using Netflow in WhatsUpGold we could see some spikes from individual ESXi hosts add up to the 80mbps but not always when things were caught up.

Now with the upgrade it has taken 3 days to complete "initial full sync" which the properties have shown a lot of that time is comparing checksum on the remote file as well as transfering data.  Because we have 30 VM's doing this I would have thought we EASILY would see 80mbps throughput aggregate across 6 ESXi hosts.  For the first two days it doesn't seem we've barely peaked 25mbps.  Just today I'm finally seeing some larger bandwidth usage, like some ESXi hosts approx 20mbps.  Just today I see 1 VM in Sync (RPO Violation), 3 VM's in Sync, 22 VM's in OK, and 4 VM's in Initial Full Sync.

Is there a reason what I think that Initial Full Sync is so throttled or slow?

For example our Exchange server is in Initial Full Sync and is at 73%.  Checksum compared: 1.02 TB of 1.40 TB and Transferred 24.43 GB of 24.43 GB.

I just want to make sure theres no other place to check where vR traffic can be throttled.  I know a lot has changed from the initial release of VR to this latest release.

Also can you vMotion a machine that is in Initial Full Sync or Sync?  The reason I ask is because I moved a VM that was in Initial full sync from an ESXi 5.0 patch 12 host to an ESXi 6.0u2 host (in preperation to evacuate the source host for an ESXi upgrade), and it crashed host.d on the destination VM, orphaning the VM (though it still ran fine).  Off hours I had to RDP to it to shut it down, then manually add it to another ESXi host so I could at least manage it.  Now that destination ESXi hostd will not start, even after reboots.  The reason I ask this about replication is becuase every time you reboot the host or try to restart hostd, a backtrace is generated in hostd.log that has some language in it regarding replication.

It will always fill up /vmfs/volumes/830250eb-944d5a3c-ee55-8197af9d8600 to 100% with a coredump.  I delete the core dump and get 71% free on this volume, however if I try to restart hostd (or the ESXi host itself) it fills up again to 100% with a core dump file.

SR 16140535006 has been created for that last issue, but really the main purpose of my thread (sorry for being so long) are these two questions:

Does anything throttle VR traffic besides my QoS on my router now in 6.1.1?  In VR 1.0 VR traffic always exited the management nics, which we did not have on dV switch, so any dV switch Network IO/SRV would not change shares or throttle traffic, hence us resorting to router QoS.

Can you vMotion a VM from a 5.0 host to a 6.0 host while VR is doing an Initial Full Sync or Sync without it crashing the destination 6.0u2 host?

Pushing metrics from one Agent to 2 Different Servers

We have 2 separate teams that have access to same clients servers (however they manage different things on the actual server). However for compliance reasons, one team can not have access to the other teams internal servers. We want to simplify monitoring for both teams.

We wanted to see if there is a way for one agent to push the data to two separate servers. Without using loadbalancer or some HA setup on the servers.

Windows 2012 guest cluster mpio

I'm setting up a file/print failover cluster and getting these storage warnings for each node

Test Disk 0 from node (server fqdn) has 1 usable path(s) to storage target.

At least two independent paths to storage target are recommended for each Test Disk.

MPIO is enabled for my EQ san. Here is my setup -

Vsphere 6 with all latest updates on 4 hosts

Separate vswitches for mgmt, vmotion and iscsi

All VMs and data volumes on EQ iscsi San

2012 R2 Guests with latest updates; RDM LUN for quorum/witness, multipathed using Dell PSP; Dell EQ hit tool installed on each node, MPIO enabled on iscsi subnet

All esxi hosts have connections to the rdm, and I am able to mount it in the guests. Am I also supposed to connect to the rdm via the MS iscsi initiator on each VM? MS MPIO is installed, but I've seen various web pages that say to use the 3rd party mpio where possible. I also didn't know if it would be safe to cross the streams by having mpio connections from 2 different pieces of software.

Thanks.

Vcenter 6, problem with AD. "Error while extracting local SSO users"

$

I have just finished installing Vcenter 6 appliance, everything went well and I joined the appliance to the domain via the web client, administration, system configuration, nodes - manage.  That worked and I rebooted the appliance, then I added the AD as an identity source which also completed without errors.  But when I goto users and groups and select my domain to list users it wont list i just receive this error "Error while extracting local SSO users".

Any ideas how to resolve this, I have gone through the documentation several times to find what i missed but i've followed all the instruction as to join to the domain and add as identity source but it just wont list the users from the domain.

What is the SSO user?  Also I am using a domain account with Domain admin priviliges when joining the domain and adding the identity source.

Thanks

Cannot get CentOS7 customisation to work while creating from template

$

Hi,

VMWare newbie, so go easy on me!

I have created a CentOS 7.2 VM, fully patched, installed perl, net-tools, and open-vm-tools 9.10.

I have converted it to a template.

I have created a Linux Customisation Specification and configured it to ask for an IP and mask, and specified "use virtual machine name" for computer name and set domain name to my required domain.

I Created a VM from the template, and selected "customise the operating system", and type in my IP and mask.

All goes well except the resulting VM has a hostname of my VM name, but it has not appended the domain name to create a full dnsname as required.

I have tried other methods in the Customisation Specification, including "Enter a name", and "Enter a name in the Clone/Deploy wizard" but nothing I have tried gives me a full dnsname with the domain appended.

When using the latter (enter name in wizard) I tried a short hostname as well as a FQDN, and the latter was rejected, saying it was not a valid NETBIOS name!

Hope someone can help me.  I'm so close to getting VM deployment from template working but for me, changing the hostname seems like such a fundamental thing that it really should just work.

I'm doing all this from vSphere Web Client by the way, on VCS 6 and ESXi 6.

BSOD when trying to kick off a disconnected user session

$

We are running AV 2.10 in a lab. We are using Horizon View 6.2.2 to deploy VDIs.

I have noticed a problem now, if we have an end user who connects to a VDI and gets his App Stack and Writable Volume deployed and then lets his session disconnect. If I then try to kick him off (by logging into the Win7 VDI machine expecting it to prompt me saying "hey another is connected would like to kick him off?") the machine blue screens.

I do not see any way of detaching an Appstack or writable volume for a disconnected user session. On the BSOD machine I see a ton of the following event logs:

EVENT ID 15 - Disk

The device \Device\Harddisk2\DR2, is not ready for access yet

EVENT ID 57 - NTFS

The system failed to flush data to the transaction log. Corruption may occur.

EVENT ID 26 - APPLICATION POPUP

Windows Delayed write failed : Exception processing message 0xc000a082

Thoughts?

My concern is often we have to recompose our VDI pools, sometimes with users disconnected and we give them the boot. However now with AV we can't have the VDI blue screening every time we have to kick someone off. As I understand all writable volumes need to be detached prior to a recompose operation. I'm trying to find a way of detaching those volumes for disconnected end user sessions without the machine taking a BSOD.

Can vRealize Hyperic coexist on a host with Operations Manager and still work?

$

Because I can't seem to get it to work.  I did a standalone install of Hyperic 5.8.5 on a different host in a different cluster and it seemed to work fine.  Now I have it in a different cluster, using different hardware, and I can't get the agents to show up.  The agents seem to install properly, but the vRealize server never sees anything.

Ops Manager is version 6.0.0

We're just testing some things to see how they would work for our customers. We're using some old Dell PowerEdge 2950 servers.  My next thing to try is adding a host to this single-host cluster.  I am thinking there is an issue having both of these on the same host.  Both are .ova deployments.

I have not been able to configure a Scheduled Task to shutdown my VMs on vCenter 6.0 U2. When trying to create a "Shut Down Guest OS" task, it behave just like a "Power Off" task. Even the GUI says it's going to create a "Power Off" task. VMware Tools is up-to-date on the VMs.

Is anybody else experiencing this issue (= is this a bug)? Follow below the screenshots of the issue:

VSAN Unicast agent error

$

So I've been trying to get vSAN to work in my lab with limited success. I'm running 6.0 U2 and setting up a stretched cluster config. Initially I could get vSAN configured but the health check showed network errors, and data was not available in both fault domains even though all the vSAN vmk IPs were available to every host. I finally noticed the unicast agent IP was set to the vmk for MANAGEMENT of the Witness VM, not the IP for VSAN. I used esxcli to change the unicast agent IP to the correct IP on both storage hosts and now all of my data objects show as healthy and everything is replicated, but I'm getting an error in the vSAN health check for "invalid unicast agent". I am using the VSAN Witness VM with the default configuration, I only changed the IPs on the vmk interfaces for my network. Anyone else managed to get vSAN up without any errors in a stretched cluster? Any ideas why these errors are occurring?

ASD service without submit but just for information

$

I would like to create some services for our end-users with which they can get some info.

In VCO I already made the workflows which return the info but now I would like to create the service

The flow is as follows: the users enters some input data like fe servername or username etc and through actions in VCO we get the requested info.

But now, I don't know how to make a service in VRA for this.

I know how to create a normal ASD service with a submit button etc, but now I don't need that submit button because the information should show up immediately (through my action in VCO) and can change when the inputvalue changes.

Anyone an idea if and how this is possible?

SAN Migration with SRM

We are planning a san migration where all virtual machines will need to be storage migrated.   We currently use SRM to protect many vms,  is there a way to migrate the config without having to unprotect and reprotect including reconfiguration of all the SRM machines?  Or is there an easy way to export the current config and then replace it when complete?

App Volumes 2.10 error when trying to create an AppStack

$

Trying to create a new Appstack...

The install of software goes well on the provisioning VM and the reboot occurs, it comes back up and tells me that provisioning is complete successfully. This is confirmed in the Appp Vols console by the fact that me new Appstack is ready to be assigned to users/VMs. However when I push the App Stack out to client VMs (or users) it will not mount.

On closer inspection of the App Stack Console logs there is actually an error during the provisioning, which I have traced to occurring immediately after the reboot, before I have clicked OK to the Provisioning successful message. So the Appstack is most likely corrupt??...

The error is:

Error while verifying the pending attachment for "[My Datastore] cloudvolumes/apps/7878.vmdk" on "Machine <My-PC> (5028e72b-5e36-3404-2393-a52faff3f9ad)"

This occurs with any software I attempt to add to any Appstack

Has anyone seen this before or better still know how to fix it?

Many thanks,

Neil
