I understand the benefits of using a VM swapfile datastore for VMs that will be replicated.   However,  if I have a large cluster (500+ VMs),  is it OK to have all vSphere hosts in the cluster use the same VMFS volume for  500+ swap files?    This is assuming that memory would never be so constrained that the swap files would be used.    If it is OK to do this,  would it be a concern if the VMFS volume was on a host/datastore that didn't support ATS Locking via VAAI?

It would be a good alternative if you could create full memory reservations on VMs to be used by SRM.  However,  it appears that vSphere still creates a 0K .vswp file when using a full memory reservation,  which will still need to be deleted by SRM on failover which will slow the process down.

I have a shared VM (2008R2) running on a machine  with W2K3.

The VM is shared and booted when the host does boot. No Problem here.

I want, of course, that the VM is suspended when the host is shutting down.

I found the information that this can be set up in vmAutoStart.xml.

It should be in D:\Programme\VMWare\Workstation\hostd but there is no file at all.

I did a search of the whole machine but couldn't find it.

I could do it with VMRun and a script at shut-down, I know.

But it's more safe if VMWare is doing the Job.

Any idea?

We have a Dell R720 with a Kepler K1 card installed and we cannot get the K1 card to be the primary adapter in the view desktop vm. The K1 cards shows up in device manager, however I cannot select the K1 adapter in the control panel/Display due to the K1 adapter not showing up in the drop down menu. We were able to set the registry to allow for changing display by hacking the registry but cannot get the K1 card working.

Any ideas?

Can anyone here please help me with the troubleshooting of the strange behaviour of my newly migrated ESXi 5.1 u1 host.

I'm trying to rescan the datastore in this one particular ESXi host only, but somehow it failed miserably with the host left being disconnected ?

I have connected to the SSH console of the host and issued the restart command to restart the management agent but it hangs in the SSH console, the ESXi host is not responding and still disconnected ?

Hola. Estoy planteando un sistema de contingencia para un vCenter 5.1.

Hasta la fecha (vCenter 4.1) tenía un segundo servidor con vCenter instalado y con otro nombre, le trasladaba la BD del vCenter original y renombraba el servidor y el SQL (vCenter y SQL en el mismo equipo).

Ahora con vCenter 5.1, al tener el servicio de single Sign On y tener durante la instalación diversas pantallas de configuración del FQDN del servidor no veo trivial instalar un segundo servidor en el que trasladar la BD y luego renombrarlo como el primer vCenter en caso de contingencia, sobretodo porque he visto varios KB's de VMware que indican problemas en caso de renombrar un servidor de vCenter 5.1:

Me preguntaba si era posible tener algún otro método de contingencia, teniendo en cuenta que el vCenter es físico y debería tener otro servidor físico de contingencia que asumiría el servicio en caso de caída del primero.

Había pensado en instalar este segundo servidor con otro nombre y también el vCenter, pero sin licenciar, y con una BD recién instalada en el mismo servidor. En caso de caída del servidor de vCenter de producción, recuperar la BD en el servidor de contingencia e intentar reconectar los hosts, ya que los certificados serán diferentes.

Desconozco si puede haber algún efecto adverso o secundario y me gustaría saberlo antes de probarlo. ¿Qué opinión os da esta solución?

What is the most accurate way to automatically report on how much power is being saved by DPM?  Ideally, I wouldn't have to sit down and look at one screen, see my usage before a DPM power down event, look at another screen and see my usage afterward, then calculate the difference, then estimate how many servers were powered off how many times and multiply, etc.

It would be nice to just generate a report at the end of the week and say "here are the number of servers that were powered off through DPM that otherwise would have been on.  Here is how long they were off.  The estimated power saved is x Kilowatt Hours."

Any ideas, software that can do this, amazing powercli scripts, etc?

I have configured SRM Alarm to find if remote site is down, but l do not find setting for  "Repeat alarm triggered every X minitues".

By default it send alerts every 5 minutes.

I'm attempting to write a script that will gather information about the VMs in a vCenter environment, namely Name, vCPUs, Memory, Operating System, and, the kicker, disk information (specifically, capacity and free space).  The script is attached, with many parts borrowed.

Now, typically, I would use the New-Object -TypeName PSObject -Property @{ }, but I couldn't find any way to use any sort of logic (i.e. a ForEach loop within this), and this is required.  For some reason, the columns for vCPU, MemoryGB, and GuestOS are blank.  Also, it's transposing the two disks, swapping the C:\ and E:\ drives (attached as well).  The Name works, but has been blanked out to protect the innocent.

Hi guys, i'm trying to get the datastore regex working by modifying nova.conf file, i have a 2 esxi cluster working with iscsi and one small volume locally for ESXi's installation:

I want to deploy the newly created isntances in the "iscsi" datastore but all get created by default in the first datastore (local1),i cant get the datastore regex to work, whats the correct syntaxis? im using datastore_regex = iscsi

Hallo zusammen,

heute habe ich mir das Upgrade auf Fusion 6 auf meinem MacBook Pro Retina installiert. Nachdem ich die Virtuellen Maschinen über die Kompatibilitätseinstellungen auf "Hardware 10" gesetzt habe, läuft soweit alles wie erhofft, jedoch mit Ausnahme der Auflösung bzw. der Vergrößerung von Text und Elementen (Einstellung in der Bildschirmauflösung unter Windows 7, die sich "Text und weitere Elemente vergrößern oder verkleinern" nennt). Hier habe ich folgendes Problem:

Die höchste Auflösung von 2880 x 1800 ist mir zu hoch. Ich habe diese auf 1920 x 1200 heruntergesetzt. Dies wird auch vom System genommen. Allerdings ist mir hier die Darstellung etwas zu groß (bei der nächst höher möglichen Auflösung von 2560 allerdings wieder zu klein). Dies liegt wohl daran, dass die oben beschriebene "Text und weitere Elemente vergrößern oder verkleinern"-Einstellung auf 150% steht. Ich kann diese zwar kurzfristig auf 100 oder 125 % heruntersetzen, dann fordert mich Windows jedoch auf, mich neu anzumelden ("Sie müssen sich am Computer abmelden ..."). Nach der erneuten Anmeldung erhalte ich dann die VMWare-Meldung, "VMWare Tools has modified the user Interface size Settings. You must log off ..." Nach der dann zweiten Ab- und Anmeldung ist die Einstellung wieder auf 150 % gesetzt.

In den VMWare-Einstellungen habe ich auch schon die Option "Automatische Anpassung der Größe der Benutzeroberfläche in Windows" aktiviert und auch mal deaktiviert. Aber wie ich es auch mache, ich behalte dauerhaft nicht die gewünschte Auflösung einschl. der gewünschten Vergrößerung.

Ich weiß zwar nicht mehr wie die Einstellungen in VMWare 5 waren und wie ich sie hinbekommen habe, aber ich erreiche die selben Anzeige jetzt nicht mehr.

So, I would like to create a virtual machine on a Cluster, not on a specified host. Does the script vmcreate.pl would do the job ? Or I should modify it ?
