Nested, dvfilter-maclearn and agent API docs

$

Hi,

I'm trying to set up a lab on an ESXi box runing nested ESXis to play with NSX and PaloAlto FW.

(play as in learning setup

In so doing, I'm discovering the dvfilter-maclearn fling which is great to minimize the impact of nested on the networking virtualization.

But it is geting hard to understand some issues, and I don't find documentation on the working of the features used.

(Issue being, e.g., that a VM is getting TX filtered by an sfw filter that NSX is not controling)

Also, the fling says to use filter4 but that hook is the one Panorama (Palo Alto Networks controller) uses for its FW Agents.

I would appreciate any pointers/string ends to start pulling

This is not a "request for support" but in the interest of helping VMware engineers find problems, and knowing full well Win 10 is beta software...

After running Win 10 build 10074 for more than a day, the virtual machine process crashed.

I've attached the VMware.log to this message, and I can provide additional supporting info via PM if requested.

Please answer_Can I share the download file with others

Hi All,

Recently I have downloaded VMWARE workstation 11 software for 30 days trial and then I installed it in my PC. While downloading it asked my email id and phone no and filled my details. After some days I gave the downloaded file to one of my friends then he gave it to many students. Now my question is if they do any hacking activity from that vmfile who is responsible for that .They or me? Now what should I do?

For the past few days I am thinking about that only and I am very afraid. I am new to these softwares. Is there any problem by sharing the exe file?

I request you to answer for this.

Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Ravi

In the late ‘90s, a storage system with one petabyte capacity was considered a great accomplishment— you got your name in news articles and also got invited to give conference keynotes! Today, the storage industry talks in terms of exabytes and zettabytes. Unless you have been living under a rock for the last few years, this should come as no surprise— the phenomenal growth rates (50-60% CAGR), coupled with the growing…

I am seeing this on our vmware infstructure

        vsan.png

Any ideas how I can get these disks to show healthy again? the server sees them just fine but I don't seem to be able to get them back in the vsan? Could I just remove the groups from the disk and re-add?

This happened after putting in to maintenance mode and a reboot for a 5.5u2 update.

Help needed to recover corrupt virtual disk - No snapshots

        Hi

        Please could somebody help me.

I was running Clean Up Virtual Machine and then I Force Quit Fusion. Now I can't start my VM. I have run vmware_vdiskmanager to try and recover the virtual disk, but I get the following error.

VixDiskLib: Invalid configuration file parameter. Failed to read configuration file.

The virtual disk, '/Users/juan-emil/Documents/Virtual Machines.localized/Windows 7.vmwarevm/Virtual Disk.vmdk', is corrupted and cannot be repaired.

In an attempt to solve the problem I created snapshots to see if I can recover from them, but all I did was to un-associate my fusion with the virtual disk.

What do I do. Please somebody help. I cannot afford to loss this VM. All my work is on it.

Workstation 11.1, Tools 9.9.2 build-2496486: Not compatible with GCC 5.1.0 on linux (Arch, Debian, Ubuntu, etc)

First, there are some compilation problems with the latest linux kernel and Tools 9.9.2's source of vmhgfs: vmhgfs module not compilable for VMware Tools 9.9.0 (Fusion7.1) after Ubuntu Linux kernel update to 3.13.0-46-generic (Febr. 2015) (Shared Folder Feature not working in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Guest) on MacOSX Yosemite (Host))?

In short, you have to patch the source to get it to compile: rasa/vmware-tools-patches · GitHub

Arch linux is a "rolling" distro, meaning we always have latest - and are usually the first to find problems before it trickles down to Ubuntu, Mint, Debian and other Linux distros. Well, now there is a serious problem that is unresolvable.

The vmhgfs source is not compatible with linux kernels built with gcc 5.1.0.  It hard locks the VM, requiring a hard reset when the kernel module loads.  It also hard locks during vmware-tools-install.pl torwards the very end when it says, "Guest filesystem driver" enabling.  And on boot, it is vmhgfs that is being loaded when the VM hard locks.

I was able to get around this earlier when gcc 4.9.2 was in core - i just rebuilt the kernel under 4.9.2: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=196915

Obviously that isn't a long-term solution.  But now that gcc 5.1.0 has been pushed out to core, that means recompiling the kernel under 4.9.2 is no easy feat since dependencies now depend on gcc 5.1.0.

@Developers: We have a big problem with VMware Tools vmhgfs and kernels compiled under gcc 5.1.0.  Given it make take years before the Debian distros get the latest and greatest, it's coming.

Because of this, and the wasted time in me having to support this mess, I may recommend to my company we no longer continue with our Enterprise account of 100 licenses of Workstation and Fusion.  It is obvious in the previous thread vmhgfs module not compilable for VMware Tools 9.9.0 (Fusion7.1) after Ubuntu Linux kernel update to 3.13.0-46-generic (Febr. 2015) (Shared Folder Feature not working in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Guest) on MacOSX Yosemite (Host))? that VMware is no hurry to resolve even the simple build errors that the community has resolved last year with patches.  Good thing too, renewal comes up in two months.

I shiver to think how long it will take VMware to release a fix for gcc 5.1.0.

Windows 10, Workstation 10, no LAN bridge

        Hi!

So, I'm running Windows 10, 64x tech preview. VMware workstation (latest greatest build (10.0.3) installs and it works just fine.

I always link a VMnet to a dedicated physical NIC. (bridge), however, even though I'm able to configure it, it simply doesn't work. The VMnet works fine internally on workstation, but not a single packet seems to be able to transfer to the host.

No firewall running, the VMware bridge drive is installed properly. When I create a host adapter for a virtual network and bridge it with the physical one it works, too. But a direct bridge doesn't work.

Can anyone running Windows 10 64x tech preview confirm this? It's quite simple configured as below.

The VMKernel interface vmk1 is configured to connect to NFS datastore (using separated nic vmnic1 and separated VLAN 950). But there were  timeout problems when trying to access NFS datastore.

What I've figured out is that I am not able to ping to NFS datastore (and reverse) with packet size bigger than 504 bytes...:

As I understand, packets are being lost somewhere between  vmk1 and vmnic1 interfaces ?

I've tried to change physical interfaces, but all behave the same.

        Is my hardware broken?

Is the igb driver broken ?

        Cheers

Having issues adding ESXi host to vCenter Server Appliance

I've been spending lots of time working on the new vCenter 5.1.0A.

I have two vCenter environments in my test and dev.

vCenter1 = Windows 2008 R2 vCenter server. It has local domain Microsoft CA self signed certificates as per following Derek Seamans blog http://derek858.blogspot.com.au/2012/09/vmware-vcenter-51-installation-part-1.html. I can add ESXi hosts to this vCenter no problems. These ESXi hosts have local domain Microsoft CA self signed certificates.

vCenter2 = VMware vCenter Server Appliance. It has local domain Microsoft CA self signed certificates as per following Doug Baer's blog http://www.goitpartners.com/blog/?p=662. I CANNOT add ESXi hosts to this vCenter when they have local domain Microsoft CA self signed certificates. I CAN add an ESXi host only if I have NOT done anything with the certificates.

        The error I get is:

License not available to perform the operation.
License file download from blade001.xxx.yyy to vCenter Server failed due to exception: vim.fault.SSLVerifyFault.

I've attached the screenshot "unable to add host to ESXi - custom cert.png" that shows this.

When I add an ESXi host that has NOT had the certificate replaced, I get prompted that it is unable to verify the authenticity of the host and asks me to veryify the thumbprint. I click yes to verify and the host is added successfully.

I've attached the screenshot "Adding host blade002 with default cert.png" that shows this.

So this is really puzzling. When a host has a replaced certificate, the thumbpring MUST be verified by the vCenter Appliance because I DO NOT get prompted about the authenticity of the host.

        Is anyone else experiencing this?

The one thing I really want to make clear is:

        • I can add the ESXi host with replaced certificates to a vCenter 5.1.0A server running on Windows 2008 R2 (vCenter1)
        • This then confirms with me that there is nothing wrong with the certificate on the ESXi host
        • I remove the host from vCenter1
        • I try and add the host to vCenter2 (Appliance) and I get the error, the host never gets added to vCenter

Question regarding a potential question, can I do it my way? Will the end result really me the measure of success?

I have a question regarding a theoretical VCAP question (specifically the example below).  I could do this is a flash by going directly to the host rather than using the stinky vMA and resxtop, would I still score the full marks by doing it my way?

        Scenario 11

        < Back | Next>

        Scenario:

On a specific ESXi host, a set of VMs is not performing well. You intend to determine the root cause. To do so, you want to collect resource usage data at a level that is more granular than the vSphere Client performance graphs can provide.

        Requirements:

        • Use resxtop to collect all statistical data for 2 minutes at 3-second intervals.
        • Export the data to a CSV file named results.csv.
        • Import the results.csv file into Windows Performance Monitor.
        • Use Windows Performance monitor to show the CPU ready time for all VMs over the 2-minute period.

        Environment Information:

        • ESXi host: host-01.lab.local
