Can't get VMware player to install in Ubuntu 12.04

I am running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and trying to install VMware Player for Linux 32-bit.

I have the file: VMware-Player-5.0.2-1031769.i386.txt

I double click on it and it opens and starts to unpack?

After about 2 hours it gets to line 742055 then stalls and closes (screenshot attached).

I get an error message (attached)

I have plenty of memory so I don't understand this failure

I have restarted the computor so that no other programs are running except this install

I have done this 5 times now with the same result

Any help, in very basic terms, will be very greatly appreciated
