We are just starting a modest virtualization project. We are an 11-person company with 8 real servers, most of which are old, none of which are very busy, although the one that is our Active Directory controller, DHCP and DNS server is quite critical. We've bought a compute server for the hypervisor, and a storage server with hardware RAID and 18TB of disk. We have configured the storage as RAID 10, and thus have 9TB net storage in one array. The storage server and the hypervisor server are connected by dedicated gigabit Ethernet. We licensed vSphere Essentials.
In our trial setup we configured the one 9TB RAID array as one LUN. Is there any reason to break this up into more than one LUN? If we did break it up, how? (e.g., we could separate RAID arrays--our flexibility is limited because there are only 6 drives--or just do a partition on the storage server of the apparent 9TB store and serve the partitions as separate LUNs.)
(A separate question is whether our Active Directory controller, DHCP and DNS server should even be virtualized.)
Thanks,
Bob
