iSCSI Datastore refuses to connect

I'm new to a VMware vCenter / vSphere environment, but not new to system engineering.  This one has me stumped as I've checked various VMware KB's, youtube toots, ..etc.

I'm simply trying to connect to a Dell PS6000 EqualLogic SAN, standard iSCSI volume of 500GB, from a vCenter ESXi host.  When attempting to add a new datastore, no matter what I do VMware refuses to see/list any configured LUNs as available to be added.  In fact, the list is just empty.

Here are a few things to note:
I've configured vmk1 with an iSCSI software adapter on a 1-1 vmnet-physical net connection in VMware.
I can establish a connection to any of these volumes on the Dell SAN through the same network from any of our non-virtual Windows 2008 servers with the built in iSCSI initiators.
I can ping the dell EqualLogic SAN IP from the ESXi host ssh console.
The ACL for the LUN volume I'm trying to connect to is set to allow any connections from any IP. (no restrictions)
The security profile within vCenter is set to allow connections in & out on most protocols including NFS.
The total storage of the Dell SAN is 6.3 TB, but the volume I'm trying to connect to is under the allowed limit for VMware of 2TB @ 500GB.
What could possibly be preventing us from adding a new datastore??
