ESXi 5.1 - can't boot new VM from OS disc

I'm trying to boot off a Server 2012 DVD to install a new VM. I am using the host DVD-RW drive. I can attach the drive to an existing VM and browse the DVD (it's not the drive) and I tested the 'bootability' of the DVD in another system and got the familiar, 'Press any key to boot from CD...' so I know the disc is fine. I have moved the CD-Rom to the top of the list in the BIOS. When I power up the VM it starts to spin up the DVD for a half sec then goes right to PXE boot (yes, I am mashing the spacebar from the second I power it on). I know I have the correct CD-Rom selected in the settings as it's the same one I can attach to other VM's to read this disc and I am selecting the 'Connect at power on,' option.

Any ideas?

TIA!
