UI failure/The session is not authenticated

We encountered an issue recently where our UI workflow stopped working. It was designed to display a list of Clusters that correspond to a Datacenter for user selection.

After looking thru the various config settings, there was nothing that had changed and all was green. It was only after viewing the server.log file that I found the following entry (names edited):

2013-04-19 17:46:28.683-0400 WARN  [VimSession] invokeWebServiceOperation() [johndoe@https://server.domain.com:443/sdk/Main#56fbda05].createFilter --> NotAuthenticated : The session is not authenticated., privilege id 'System.View'

The session is not authenticated.

I've seen this error reported with Converter and other products, but not Orchestrator. Turns out this was caused by the Virtual Center value being changed from ‘Share a unique session’ to ‘Session per user’. After setting this to ‘Share a unique session’ and setting the proper ID/Password, the problem was solved.

I'd like to know a bit more about the security differences between the two. Thanks.
