ESXi host freezes every couple of hours

Hello, world!

It's my first post on this forum and the beginning of my journey with ESXi.

Recently I have built a new home server, hardware-wise it is using:

  • ASRock X99 WS board
  • Xeon E5-2630 v3
  • 2x 16GB DDR4 2133MHz Samsung ECC Reg RAM
  • A few HGST HDDs, and M.2 Samsung SSD to store host and VMs

Software-wise, I decided to go with BTRFS, so I am virtualizing Rockstor (basically CentOS with a newer kernel) in ESXi 6.0.

I tested a few other options, but decided to go with that.

However, my ESXi host freezes after a few hours (last time it worked for a little less than 3 hours).

I have checked knowledge base and have found article 1017135

Here are my results:

  • Both host and VM freeze (VM services do not run, vSphere client disconnects, neither host not VM are pingable)
  • Problem is persistent

  1. NumLock stops changing on the keyboard after host goes unresponsive
  2. Disk lights stop blinking, they are simply glowing
  3. (I am not sure if it is applicable to me, I am not using HA clusters)
  4. How do I trigger NMI state? / What do I do next?
  5. Unfortunately I do not have any other device that supports ILO, DRAC or RSA. Of course if it is an essential part in troubleshooting, I will get my hands on something.
  6. Usually reboot helps to solve the problem for a short period of time (however at the time of writing host entered unresponsive state right on boot)
  7. HOW do I collect diagnostic information?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I am a little bit confused with support solutions in knowledge base.

Thanks!

Lev
