I am running Solidworks 10 64 bit in a Windows XP 64 bit vm. The host OS is 64bit Windows 7. Solidworks ran great until I upgraded the VMware tools with the latest version that came with Workstation 9. With the version 8 video drivers, panning and rotating assemblies worked as expected. With the new video drivers, the parts in the assembly became blocks when I panned and rotated the assembly. I rolled back the video drivers and everything started working again.
Overall, SW works well in a virtual machine with the old video drivers from Workstation 8. My hardware platform is build around an I7-960 processor with 24gb ram and a Nvidia Quadro 2000 video card. I have 4gb ram and two processors assigned to the vm. It runs faster that the 32 bit version of Solidworks on an old computer with a core 2 duo processor, 4gb ram and a Quadro FX1700 video card.
I was lucky in discovering this video driver solution because I upgraded from version 8 to version 9. If this had been a new purchase, I would have asked for my money back.
