There is a storage issue with datastore path [Path to .vmdk]

I have two sites connected using a VPN connection over a WAN link. In each site I have an esxi host with several VMs and the vSphere Replication Appliance running (v 5.1.1.0 Build 1079383) in each site. In each site these is also a vCenter server with the VR appliance registered and connected with the other site. All VMs are configured to replicate to the opposing site.

In my initial setup of VR (first install) the remote site had 2 vnics used for management and I suspected that was my problem with replication (see kb2040302). So I have since changed my host configuration in the remote site to have only one management vnic (didn't fix the problem). I then unregistered, removed and reinstalled the VR appliance with no change to the problem.

What is happening:

1.  I am able to configure replication between sites without a problem.

2. Initial replication happens between both sites and reports a success.

3. The remote site VM's replicating to the main site continue to work fine and all is well for days and continue to work.

4. The main site VM's replicating to the remote site fail on the second and all subsequent attempts to replicate with the error. There is a storage issue with datastore path '[datastorename]'

I have followed the advice in kb2040302 as best I can. But I will admit I could use some more detailed instruction on how and in which site I should be checking the logs. and how to verify my management vnic setup.

I am looking for someone to please provide additional troubleshooting steps with good detail.

Thank you
