/mnt/hgfs empty with Ubuntu 13.04

VMware Tools installs fine provided that I have gcc, dpkg-dev, and the appropriate kernel headers installed (i.e. no VMCI errors).  However, when I try to share a host folder with my Ubuntu 13.04 VM, /mnt/hgfs is empty.  I did try chmod 777 on the folder that I am sharing, but this step should not even be necessary.
