If the vSphere client disconnects, migration of a powered-off machine will stop. Why is that?

Hi all, I often do administration of a vCenter-managed group of hosts over a VPN. Recently I was migrating a large powered-off VM from one datastore to another (same host). The transfer had reached about 89% when my vSphere client disconnected. It must be very sensitive to latency as neither the internet nor VPN connection dropped.

When I reconnected I hoped to see the task in progress - instead it had disappeared, presumably automatically cancelled. I had to start again but ultimately hit the end of my outage window before the migration could complete.

I'm wondering if anyone can explain: why can't the host simply go and finish the migration, regardless of whether a client is connected or not? Is there a way to do this so that you don't have to keep a client connected continuously?

Many thanks for any advice!
