Hi guys and gals,
Ok, picture the scene:
- Datacentre relocation required between 2 physical sites
- 2 esx 4.1hosts to physically move
- 5 guests to move
- 18TB of allocated storage, thick provisioned (1tb max thin or actual use)
Do I:
- Change disk to be thin provisioned, move 1x host, move 5x guests over the WAN (10gb fibre), then move 1x host (then thick provision disks again)?
- Storage replication through magic SAN replication, stand up 2x hosts in new datacentre, present new luns of copied guests and away?
My preference is 1, however I have a few other issues. If I go with 1, how to get vms that have multiple vdisks in multiple datstores over in the same format (eg retain any split into multiple other datastores). If I go with 2, doesn't the vmx file point to some relative path that won't exist as luns will have new news and have to edit each machine to point to each disk file for each disk?
Yep I'm rusty on vmware, but never had to move hosts to a different data centre (physically) and on different storage subsystems. All networking, vmware config remains the same, purely physical location of hardware and the storage it's presented.
Thanks in advance
Mr D NZ
