Boot failure with 2 SATA disks on 5.1

I have a stable 5.1 installation on an Ivy Bridge based laptop. I have 1 SATA SSD and everything works fine. If I add a second SATA disk (in the DVD-ROM bay via a  2.5inch HDD bay converter) the system pink screens on boot every time. Interestingly, I can boot the system in to the  5.1 installer just fine, and it seems both drives and will install to either. But a completed installation will pink screen every time if both disks are on, and not at all if either are connected independently. The system will also boot fine if a DVD drive is in the bay. The PSOD seems to be in the hostd process and there's a bunch of messages about ACPI. I tried booting with noACPI specified on the 5.1 boot string (after pressing shift O) but that didn't really seem to do anything. It certainly didn't stop the PSOD. Also tried the same with 'nopowerManagement". No joy.
