From the editors Virtual Desk

Hi everyone, this week we have a really interesting featured article on security which is something I think that has been at the top of many CEO and corporations minds lately and has also been in the news and definitely something to take seriously. The article is around a service that is offered in our region and has been developed with key VMware teams over the past year or so. Please read on below and let your TAM or Account rep know if you would like more info.

I would also like to point your attention to one of our TAM guest bloggers, Christian Wickham who has contributed an article for our TAM Blog. The article is below and well worth a read.

Best Wishes

FEATURED ARTICLE

Security Implications for vSphere hosts and Guests

The frequency and sophistication of hacking attacks against organisations in our region has increased markedly over the past year. These attacks have compromised Australian and New Zealand Government sites and both enterprise and SME businesses.

The attacks are being launched by two main groups, State sponsored Actors and OrganisedCyber Criminals.

The State sponsored actors have two main goals, the first of which is to extract military and strategic intelligence from Governments, the second goal is to steal Intellectual Property and designs from private and public companies. China has also been responsible for stealing pricing strategies from companies like BHP, Rio Tinto and Fortescue Metals.

Organised Cyber Criminals are basically looking for any means to make money. They often achieve thisby stealing bank account information, productdesigns that they can sell to third parties and more recently in Australia Ransomware has become the new opportunity.

So, What does that all mean to us?

The virtualisation of systems in Australia is the highest in the world and this means that hackers will be actively testing the security of hosts and VM's. As we all know, VMware products have been fairly secure with few vulnerabilities but the guest O/S's that we need to employ don't all have a good security history.

The VMware vSphere Security Checkis a specialised VMware security scan that has been developed to directly examine vSphere hosts and their guest VM's.

The VMware vSphere Security Check is conducted by deploying a purpose-built VMware security appliance which is specifically customised with the latest industry standard security assessment and vulnerability testing tools.  A Security consultant will scan and expertly analyse your vSphere vCenter Server, ESX/ESXi hosts and Guest OS images to develop a comprehensive security assessment report which identifies any critical operational and security risks discovered within your environment. This targeted Virtual Environment scanning service is a unique product offering from VMware Australia and is available for Australian and New Zealand customers.

This service is a collaborative process where aVMware consultant will work with your team to

understand your unique security risk profile and provide guidance on the current security vulnerabilities. Working together with your team, the consultant will provide actionable remediation steps and recommendations to secure your virtual infrastructure.

VMware Accelerate: The On-Demand Services EffectAuthor: Michael Francis  A business model describes the rationale of how an organisation creates, delivers, and captures value . 1 When I consider the way on-demand services has changed business models, I think of the traditional retail model, which was a bricks-and-mortar store with trained staff to sell the goods. The value proposition—what was really being sold—would be the variety of goods combined with the knowledge of the sales team. For example, a video store of the ’90s provided me with the…

VMware Cloud Ops Blog: Transforming IT Services is More Effective with Org ChangesBy: Kevin Lees My last post examined what an IT service looks like in practice . But what if you’ve only gone as far as deciding that you need to transform IT? How do you act on that decision? Now I want to suggest some specific organizational changes that will help you successfully undertake your transformation. VMware vCloud Blog: Get Started with the VMware Cloud Credits Purchasing Program Today! In today’s economy, it’s of paramount importance for businesses to be able to scale rapidly in order to meet changing business demands.  However, it may be difficult for IT to meet a business unit’s requirements because of slow provisioning times. The business will look for alternatives to ensure they are able to meet deadlines, leading to rogue spend as some public cloud providers can make it easy for the business to side-step IT, swipe a credit card and consume cloud. This can be a big problem for…

VMware End User Computing: Giving PCs New PurposeBy: Courtney Burry, Director of Product Marketing, End User Computing, VMware Simplifying desktop management is still a very compelling reason for organizations across the globe to make the move to desktop virtualization.
