Backups fail after upgrading from v5 to v5.1

Hello Everyone,

Recently we upgraded our vCentre & ESXi boxes from v5 to v5.1, then upgraded guests tools to latest version.

Since then, our linux machines back up ok, but we have not been able to back up our windows machines using Symantec BackupExec or Acronis vmProtect. Machines are a mix of 2003 & 2008 Std x86 & x64 servers.

When attempting to back up, the snapshots fail & we receive the following errors:

vSphere:

Create virtual machine snapshot

Status: fault.ApplicationQuiesceFault.summary
Error Stack: The Guest OS has reported an error during quiescing. The error code was: 5 The error message was: 'VssSyncStart' operation failed: IDispatch error #8455 (0x080042307)

Windows Error Log:

Log Name:      Application

Source:        VMware Tools

Event ID:      1000

Level:         Warning

User:          SYSTEM

Description: [ warning] [vmvss:vmvss] CVmSnapshotRequestor::UnregisterProviderImpl():1878: failed to unregister provider, error 0x80042307 (I)

We have tried rebooting the machines & also reinstalling vmware tools, with no luck.

Any recommendations where to look next?

Regards,

Josh
