How to mask the CPUINFO in Workstation from Intel i7 mobile to Intel® Xeon® Processor E3-1230

Hello forum!

In order to test some run some lab tests we need ESXi running under VMWare Workstation to recognize the physical machine CPU (Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3840QM CPU @ 2.80GHz) as Intel Xeon processor, something like an Intel Xeon E3-1230 would be ok.

The closest thing we've found in the forums is this post:

Is it possible to "mask" the CPUID in Workstation?

However Jim does not go into detail on how are the codes to be inserted in the config file generated.

For example this:

cpuid.0.ebx = "0110:1000:0111:0100:0111:0101:0100:0001"

cpuid.0.ecx = "0100:0100:0100:1101:0100:0001:0110:0011"
cpuid.0.edx = "0110:1001:0111:0100:0110:1110:0110:0101"
cpuid.1.eax="----:0000:0000:0000:----:1111:0100:0110"

My questions are:

1.) What are the cpuid.* codes required for ESXi to recognize a CPU as a Xeon E3-1230?

2.) How are those codes "generated"?

Thanks so much for the help you could provide!!

Best,

Nicolas E.
