Display ESX host short name in vCenter instead of FQDN

I don't have any issues, but I would like to have the vSphere Client to display only the short name of the host instead of the FQDN. Just extra clutter in the mgmt gui that I would like to get rid of and I would like to use short names in PowerCLI.  I've tried tweaking the DNS and IP settings using the DCUI and using on the short name when adding host to vCenter, but the FQDN is always displayed.   Is there some simple option that I am missing?   My next step would be try adding entries to the vCenter server hosts file and putting the the shortname before the FQDN, but would like to ask the community before risking a change.   I can do in lab first.
