Using a Virtual Drive via a USB Memory stick or HDD

Greetings;

I have a Macbook Air 13", Mid-2012 model with an i7 Processor and 8GB of ram

Unfortunately I only have the 256 GB SSD and I like to conserve space

I originally had VM Ware Fusion 5 set to attache a Boot-camp partition of Windows 7 Ultimate x64  as a virtual disk, splitting HArd drive partition in exactly half.

Now im testing settings with windows 8 and currently have it fully virtualized, no bootcamp.

What I would like to know is can I migrate this to a large memory stick (100GB or larger memory stick) or a USB/External HDD and run windows from that device directly with no major performance hits?

I would plan to use the USB 3.0 devices for better speed throughput

Is this feabile if i plan to use this setup for mostly windows development in my school classes (ASP.Net, Visual Studio 2012, SQLServer 2012, etc) as well as personal things like dreamweaver and other windows based dev tools?
