Update to Workstation 9.0.1 failed, now I can't even install 9.0.0

Workstation 9.0.0 helpfully offered to upgrade me to 9.0.1 today.  In the process of doing that, it uninstalled the old version.  But then the 9.0.1 install failed.  And neither the 9.0.0 installer nor the 9.0.1 installer will work if I launch them myself.  The progress bar on "installing packages on the system" gets most or all the way to the right, then unwinds back to the left and leaves me with the error dialog:

The MSI '...my temp path...\vmware_1354243296\vmwareworkstation_64.msi' failed.

Service 'VMware Workstation Server' (VMwareHostd) could not be installed.  Verify that you have sufficient privileges to install system services.

I sure hope I have those privileges, since the installer asked me for admin privileges when I started it!  But just for grins, I ran the installer as administrator and got the same outcome.

Did the uninstaller leave some crud behind that I have to clean up myself?

The installer left behind three log files in my temp folder, which I have attached for anyone who knows what to look for.  vminst.log seems to be cumulative, so I trimmed it to the last install, I think.  Before the complaint about VMwareHostd, there is a similar complaint about VMAuthdService.

For extra credit, explain this error, which I got during one of my many attempts to run the installer:

Warning 1946.Property 'System.AppUserModel.ID' for shortcut 'VMware Workstation.lnk' could not be set.

Thanks for any help.

(Windows 7 64 bit, in case it's not obvious.)
