One NIC for vSwitch and VDS?

Hello,

I am fairly new here and in the world of VMware overall. I would appreciate if any of you guys is able to provide me with some input in order to clear this concept for me.

I've got an ESXi host and have installed vCenter on a VM, connected to a vSwitch. That ESXi host has only one NIC. The vSwitch automatically has the single working NIC assigned and is connecting to the world. Now, in order to create a working VDS, I need to assign NIC to it. However, it requires the NIC to be removed from the host first, in order to be able to be assigned to the VDS. Removing it causing the host to loose internet connection.

My question is:

Is there a way to use a single NIC for vSwitch and for VDS, or the whole point of ESXi/vSphere is that you should always use more than one NIC?

If there is another way around, I would appreciate if you point it out, but so far I've experienced the fact that there is no way to have a single NIC and at the same time having vSwitch and VDS connected to the world.

Thanks,

Nikolay
