Hi,
I am new to vmware so apologies if anything i say doesnt quite make sense... Hopefully, someone will understand what i wish to do and can explain!
Ok, we have had VMware on site for many yrs but no training... Many consultants have done work but never explained it to us...
Our vmware infrastructure is mainly servers but i currently need to setup a testing server and 2 test clients so vmware would be ideal as i can simply knock it on the head when im finished.
The issue im having is, currently i have 3 vlans configured on the hosts. 1 is the management network, 2 is a legacy 192.168 network which is still actually in use as one of the servers is required for our access control solution and our current live 172.168.102.x Server vlan. This was all configured by a consultant last yr so its been fine until now (i need to add the test environment in).
The engineer told me i could add as many vlans as i wanted into vmware by simply tagging the ports on the switch. This i have done so i have tagged the ports the hosts connect to with the test vlan. I read i need to add the number on the system configuration page on the host itself. I went to do this but there is already a value in the box, 162 (Server Vlan).
Am i able to simply press "," and enter 165 (test vlan) or do i need to enter 4065? the number for all vlans?
Once this is done, i know i need to create the network port on the VMware networking page which i have already done however though the physical switch port is tagged, i still doesnt work on my guest so i assume this is because i havent added 165 or changed to 1065 on the configuration screen on the host?
Is this the correct procedure or is their a better way?
Also, once its been added, do i need to do anything specific because we already have a testing dhcp box and i need the clients to connect to it to retrieve the ip and dns information...
Thanks in advance.
Again, apologies if what im asking isnt as clear as it could be, im trying to achieve something simple but to me, very complicated!
