When upgrade from ESX 4 to ESXi 5.1, I chose the option to install ESXi 5.1 and keep VM on datastore instead of "migration". Thus, all the VM instances created from ESX 4 were not imported into ESXi 5.1 and inventory list shows 0 VM instance. When checked data storage, I found VM directories are still there and all the related files are still under those directories. So, my question now is how to "import" those VM instances into ESXi 5.1. One solution is to create a new VM instance with same name under ESXi 5.1 and choose to use VMDK file under the VM (of the same name) directory. But, I don't know if ESXi 5.1 will do conversion automatically if required or error will be seen due to some incompatibility between ESX 4 and ESXi 5.1? Or, there is a better solution or any working solutions? Really appreciate your help and advise!
