Added SATA drive can't login to vSphere

ESXI 5.1

So I tried to add a SATA drive to run local backups and, after bootup, my vSphere client would not login.  It kept on giving me a 'server took too long to respond,' error. I was able to log into the host via SSH and did a 'services.sh restart' but I still could not log in to the client. At that point I was getting a little worried about my VM's so I did a 'poweroff' from the CLI, ejected the SATA drive (removable drive bay), and powered back on. Everything came up fine without the new drive attached so now to the point of wondering what went wrong.

Does ESXi take longer to boot when a new datastore is attached (maybe I didn't give it enough time)? Any ideas as to what happened? Under events I see a 'A vmkcore disk partition is available and/or a network coredump server has been configured. Host core dumps will be saved,' so it looks like it was recognized.

Any ideas or things to try are appreciated. TIA!
