Datastore inaccesible

$

Hi,

We have two separate site, each running their own vcenter and each with their own SAN. One site was designated as the DR site for the other (however we do have a couple of production servers on the DR site). We had a power shut down last night. The production site was shutdown gracefully, however the DR site was not (power was cut). We managed to get both sites back up and running however now have several datastores as inaccessible. All datastores on the production SAN are listed as inaccessible by the DR VCenter and all datastores on the DR SAN are listed as inaccessible on the production VCenter (We could previously see both before the shutdown). Bizarely enough we have two datastores, one on the production SAN and one on the DR san that both vcenters can see quite happily?

Also we had previously setup Site recovery to replicate some of the production VM'S over the DR site. Site recovery no longer has any recovery plans, nor does it have the DR site listed in the "Sites section"

Hope this makes sense/any ideas?

We are scheduled to cleanly shut down the DR site tomorrow, is this likely to fix the issue?

Kind Regards,

Paul

Hi,

I am troubleshooting a CPU performance problem in a vSphere cluster with vRealize. Here is the capture of the analysis view :

I would like to know what is the entitlement metric for a cluster ?

How is this entitlement metric calculated ?

How to change a dvportgroup for a VM with vRO ?

Hi everybody,

I'm looking for a way to change a network binding for VM.

After a cluster migration done with vRO, i want to change the backing to map dvportgroup on the new cluster in the new datacenter (so another VDS)

I am able to change a network with standard switch, but not with vDS.

I can retrieve the portgroup, but how to assign to existing ethernet adapter ?

Here is the script for standard switch :

var existNetwork = eth1.name
var newNetwork = neweth1.name
var vmspec = new VcVirtualMachineConfigSpec();
var device = new VcVirtualPCNet32();
var devicearr = new Array();
var nic = new VcVirtualEthernetCardNetworkBackingInfo();

nic.deviceName = newNetwork;

var devicespec = new VcVirtualDeviceConfigSpec();
var devices = host.config.hardware.device;

for( var i in devices)
{
System.log("dans la boucle")
    if(devices[i] instanceof VcVirtualPCNet32)        {        System.log("liste device pcnet")            if (devices[i].deviceInfo.summary == existNetwork)            {            System.log("trouvé")                devicespec.device = devices[i];                devicespec.operation = VcVirtualDeviceConfigSpecOperation.edit;                devicespec.device.backing = nic;                devicearr[0] = devicespec;            }        }
}

vmspec.deviceChange = devicearr;
task = host.reconfigVM_Task(vmspec);

cannot access appliance manager - unable to authenticate

I'm not sure exactly, but shouldn't the password on port 5480 (for vmware appliace management) be the same as the one I'm using on the vsphere webclient? It simply won't work. I keep getting "Unable to authenticate. Try again."

Not sure what I'm doing wrong. I also simply tried "root" and "vmware" as password, thinking that it might require different credentials (which might not have been changed) than the vsphere webclient.

If I connect to the server through ssh, it works with the same credentials I'm using on the webclient, but the shell is disabled (not sure why or how I can enable it - maybe by accessing the shell I might be able to change the appliance management credentials).

Any ideas? Thanks!

SSD Performance Degradation in VMWare Workstation Guest

Problem:

2x PCI NMVE (Samsung SM960) SSDs in RAID 0 benchmark significantly slower in guest O/S than host O/S.

Host and guest are Windows 10, updates current as of today.

VMWare Workstation 14, updates current as of today.

Disks are split/not preallocated.

Results in attached PDF.

Disks are not independent, there are no snapshots and I see no significant difference between independent and non-independent.

I expect some performance trade off in the virtual machine, probably of the order of 10% or so.

10% is an assumption but I don't expect the guest to be orders of magnitude worse than the host.

On some of the tests the guest throughput is 1/3 or less than that of the host.

I have tested this for various disk types; none get anywhere near the reported host performance.

Is there anything that can be done from a topological, system settings or drivers perspective to improve the guest throughput?

( Updated to correct a result in the attached PDF. )

Enabling Guest OS Debug under ESXi

Hi All,

I am attempting to debug a Linux kernel issue for a customer that is running in ESXi. I am wondering if guest debugging, like that found under workstation, is also available under ESXi.

If it is possible, does anyone know the configuration options to enable it? I can't imagine that it would be enabled by default.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance...

External accessibility of vCenter Server issues

$

Hi there,

I am trying to make my vCenter Server Appliance externally accessible. I have a public static IP assigned to the VCSA, and I have a DNS record with my web host pointed at that IP address. I can reach the VM without any issues until I choose either "Launch vSphere Client (HTML5)" or "Launch vSphere Web Client (Flex)." When I make one of those choices, it acts as if it wants to go to that Client; however, mid-stride it attempts to navigate to the internal IP address of the vCenter Server Appliance... which works okay if you're local to the internal network, but not-so-much if you're attempting to access the VCSA externally (my entire goal). My guess based upon troubleshooting is it's checking for the PSC (in this case, it's embedded) which is tied to vCenter Server based upon the internal IP address.

My question is: Can I resolve this without redeploying vCenter Server with an external PSC? Or am I going to have to create another, different publicly available static IP for the PSC and redeploy vCenter Server with an external PSC?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Hi there,

For the VMWare ESXi, I am using Vmware Workstation to connect to the ESXi platform.

1) Can be link to the internet. - any of the VM for RDPin purposes, how to assign to one of the Internet address?

2) How to make copy and paste movement work in VMWare ESXi in VMWare Workstation? I don't face this install while VMWare workstation installed on my local machine

- I am trying to copy some files over.

3) How to do port forwarding - in VMWare Workstation just used the NAT portforwarding method.

    VCSA 6u2 check for updates fails using internet proxy

    I am having this problem that if I use Check Updates -> Check URL I get the error "Download Failed." in the VMware Appliance Management Interface (VAMI)

    Internet Proxy is configured in VAMI.

    This problem applies to both of these versions.

    VMware vCenter Server Appliance

    6.0.0.20000 Build Number 3634791

    VMware vCenter Server Appliance

    6.0.0.10200 Build Number 3343022

    I am checking

    /var/log/vmware/applmgmt/software-packages.log

    and find

    Resolving vapp-updates.vmware.com... failed: Name or service not known.

    wget: unable to resolve host address `vapp-updates.vmware.com'

    Yes DNS server does not resolve internet IPs but that is no problem for vRO appliance or older vSphere Update Manager or any internet browser.

    Actually nothing reaches the internet proxy (logging on firewall) it appears the VCSA does not even try to contact the internet proxy.

    Anybody an idea what's wrong? I think DNS shouldn't have to forward to internet DNS, I mean VRO and older vSphere Update Manager can do without it as well.

    Tuning Windows 10 for Instant Clone Desktops

    Hi All,

    Just doing some tuning on the desktops and have a question or two about it.  I'm guessing that I am missing something or something is not right.  After Optimizing the desktop and going thru the local group Policy to disable all the Windows 10 crap (Cortana, Windows apps, etc) i can't get them to work on the network.  If i login locally all is disabled but When i logging to the domain they are all back.  I looked at all the Domain GPS's and made some changes there but most of them are specifir to windows 10.  How do i get those GPO settings to stay?  Any help is appreciated.  thanks.

    UNKNOWN_FAULT_FATAL - Either the resource pool: resgroup-8 is empty or all its hosts are marked for maintenance.

    Hi,

    I put the host in maintenance mode without setting the InstantClone.Maintenance annotation value. I also manually deleted the 2 instant clones I had.

    Since then I have brought up the host and put it back into maintenance mode according to these instructions. However I am still getting the above error. Nothing will provision.

    1. Select the host that you want to put in maintenance mode. If you are using the vSphere web client, make sure that the plug-in to edit Annotations is installed.
    2. Look up Annotations in the host's Summary tab and set InstantClone.Maintenance to 1.
    3. Wait up to 3 minutes and the parent VMs on this host will be deleted. Also, the value for InstantClone.Maintenance will change to 2.
    4. Put the host in maintenance mode. This host will no longer be used for provisioning.
    5. Perform maintenance.
    6. Take the host out of maintenance mode.
    7. Clear the InstantClone.Maintenance annotation value.
    8. As new provisioning happens, parent VMs and then instant clones will be created on this host.

    Please help, I'm stuck

    Thanks!

    Horizon 7.6 and Persona Management

    Is anyone else having any luck with PM in 7.6?  We ran into the now-known issues with PM not working in 7.5/7.5.1 before it was known (that was a fun weekend / Monday) and rolled back to the 7.4 agent as a workaround.  I was hopeful that 7.6 would resolve those problems, but it appears to not be attaching or syncing profiles at all just like 7.5.  We've been running mixed with the infrastructure and guests using UEM at 7.5.1 and the older guests with PM using 7.4 and I'd like to get everything synced back up at some point.  Unfortunately, I'm stuck supporting these Win7 w/PM pools for a while longer until I can get everyone pushed over to our Win10 w/UEM pools so having PM working correctly is sort of a necessity.

    I did see the new addition in the known issues section of the release notes with PM and filter driver things like AV and I've removed anything else from the template with a filter driver aside from the Horizon Agent - no dice still.

    Memory overhead not shown in ESXi 6.0 - Known bug?

    Hi,

    I just realized that memory overhead in all my VM's hosted inside an ESXi 6.0.0.3568940 (ESXi 6.0 U1b Express Patch 5) is not shown.  I mean when I inspect every VM via vSphere client, in the Summary tab, the field Memory overhead is empty as shown below:

    esxi6-no-mem-overhead.png

    My vSphere Client is 6.0.0.3562874.

    I have other ESXi (4.1 U1, 4.1 U2 and 5.5 U2) and they don't have this problem.

    Is this a known problem?

    Thanks

    Horizon 7.6 upgrade, cannot recompose, delete VMs, etc.

    Hello:

    We just upgraded one of our environments from Horizon 7.4 to 7.6.  The composer and connection server upgrades went as planned and everything is green in the Horizon admin console, and clients can connect, etc.  Next we re-installed the Horizon Agent on our golden master VMs and tried to recompose the pools.  Everything is just sitting there and nothing is happening, the VMs don't go in to maintenance mode, nothing.  So I tried deleting a VM from the pool to see if it would re-create it using the new golden master VM snapshop we have selected for the recompose, again nothing, it's just sitting in "Deleting" status.

    This just started after we did the upgrade, everything was working up to that point.  What could be going on here??  Our environment is pretty simple so I'm surprised to see these kind of issues.  I read the upgrade documentation for 7.6 and did not see anything that would pertain to this.

    Also, I noticed that when I try to edit a pool to look at its settings, a popup comes up that says "Unknown" and there is no information given (see below).

    Has anybody else been seeing these issues and know what's going on???

    Thanks much.
